Always up for Springsteen, Star Wars, Swift, Die Hard, dogs, cats, and good news.
If you also love the obscure interests of smart people, news eps are up of Chet By Lightning, the podcast where @thematterickson.bsky.social and I dissect all things Chester A Arthur related in Death By Lightning, the @netflix.com show about the Garfield assassination. WAY more fun than it sounds.
LOVE when I learn the obscure interests of smart people!

Two new women governors were just elected and they’ll face all the challenges of being “the first.”

Real support means using your critical thinking to see the tools of sexism as they’re used.

I had a dream last night that I was trying to get @theonion.com to do a story today with the headline “Activist Left Already Disappointed in Mayor-Elect Mamdani” and I woke up laughing.

(It was an “I’m asleep trying to laugh” laugh, but a laugh.)

A great day for the golden rule of political analysis: when the right wins it is a resounding ideological victory that humiliates the left and when the left wins it is a precarious fluke that will surely end up humiliating the left. Conservatives are power’s landlords and the left merely tenants

Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."

I’ve had a lot of fun in my life telling Youths who were too young to remember it about the time Dick Cheney shot his friend in the face, which might be a fun treat for you too today if you know any teenagers

the part where the guy who got shot had to apologize to Cheney is the 2000s in a nutshell

New data from the Mayors Innovation Project: women mayors face steeper barriers to doing their jobs—undermined, second-guessed, held to higher standards with fewer supports.

🚨For women mayors of color, the gaps are wider.🚨

The tools of racism are available, and people use them.

Rampant harassment, threats to their family and property, criticism of their appearance, attempts to limit their formal authority—these are just a few of the individual and systemic barriers women mayors face.

For too many women mayors, challenges to their authority aren’t about performance—
they’re about power.

New Mayors Innovation Project research shows women mayors are more likely to have their authority questioned, limited, or attacked through lawsuits and procedural maneuvers.

Watching CBS interview with Trump and pleading once again: stop interviewing this guy. He will filibuster (lol) and lie and avoid answering; he’ll broadcast further misinformation. No one is a good enough interviewer to crack him bc it is not really an interview.

“Having an infrastructure that takes harassment and threats against all mayors seriously…could prevent actual acts of violence and help mayors feel supported enough to continue doing their job well.”

I can’t stress enough the daily impact this has. In the end, the whole community suffers. #nzpol
When I was mayor of Mpls, I was on the leading edge of something people didn’t want to name — a new wave of harassment toward women in public office.

Turns out that ants both know how to do this and have evolved to do this—they are ahead of a lot of humans in America, it turns out.

D’Angelo was genuinely one of the only humans on the planet who had any business covering a Prince song. And in my opinion that is a rather short list of people.

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

A good way for Republicans to stop being called Nazis and authoritarians is to stop empowering an authoritarian president, undermining democratic norms at every opportunity, and making Holocaust jokes.
Dave McCormick: "I do think some of this horrible language on the extreme left -- 'fascism, Nazism, authoritarianism' -- I think that's a recipe, an introduction and encouragement to violence. It's gotta stop."
