Can't see any shiny sky here, but I'm really digging all the photos! I didn't even know aurorae came in shades of red.

So. many. options. I shall limit myself to three.

The Neverending Story, gifted to me at age 7. So MUCH more to it than the movie, and it goes even harder as an adult. (City of Lost Emperors is downright chilling these days, too many loved ones with dementia.)
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

My dad was raised speaking (Texas) German, and I remarked I wished I'd spent more time trying to learn it from him as a kid.

This morning he called to suggest this video might be worth watching.

I have no idea what I just watched, Dad, but boy those ladies aren't wearing much.

Exactly twice, when it was just getting started, because I'm in IT and getting a look at the terrain is the job.

Determined it produced garbage, why it produced garbage, and went back to doing actual work.
Hands up if you've never used Chat GPT ✋

(I feel like Dozer and Tank in The Matrix right now - at first I didn't use it because, rather ironically, I'm lazy and stubborn (peak Taurus energy there) - literally no, don't make me use the new thing I don't wanna. Now I'm glad I didn't 😅)
Probably a good way to tell right now if the job you’re applying for is run by absolute dumbfucks is to ask if they’re using AI.

Look. Times are hard. Shit sucks.

Here's a live feed of 11 Springer Spaniel puppies from Finland. Their mother's name is Maru. She shows up every few hours to feed them. She's understandably fucking tired. Just an adorable pack of potates who excel at bettering your mood.

I struggle with even guarded optimism these days, but this breakdown of the situation at least gives me some fragment of a crumb of "maybe this wasn't just the Democrats being largely spineless disasters for once."
Folks, we need to have a little Civics #101 chat, because apparently the media no longer seems fit to explain to you whats happening.

So quick review:

The House passed a clean CR.

The senate has not passed anything.

My health insurance has sent me three warnings about changes and auto-enrolled me in the closest thing to a plan like the one I've been on.

Cost multiplier: 10x. I'd be paying, monthly, ten times what I have been. (Granted, this is shit-tier insurance.)

The Democrats need to not fold.

It took me about three months to get here but...

Here's a 🪶 for (nearly) every species of bird, with colors extracted from wikipedia descriptions.

10,151 species.

Zeughauskeller potato salad. Yes, it is quite good.

Russet potatoes, Duke's, dijon, parsley, yellow onions, Penzeys beef base, chicken bouillon, bit of salt.

Picture an animal that huddles up with others when stressed, babysits its young, hangs out around relatives, and gathers in big groups every year.

Did you imagine a rattlesnake?

I share a song that just gives me joy. I think I picked this one up during early college, when I was being a computer lab goblin.

My writing classmates will know why I thought of it. I can't remember which of you were there for the class chat about Joyce's various novels.

I love my local farmer's market. The checkers have tags with the languages they speak, and most of them have one or both of Amharic or Bengali. I've picked up just enough Amharic ("A little, a little!") to startle them and then get big grins. (I am so white. They ask if I spent time in Ethiopia.)

Applesauce!

Two big tart Grannies, five disappointing Galas, five spice instead of cinnamon, bit of vanilla, bit of rosewater, dash of salt, drizzled honey.

Marvelous. A meh apple for eating makes an excellent one for 'sauce.
