And Laurie was central to the campaign for shorter working hours that led to the introduction of the 38 hour week - he argued that workers had a right to enjoy the benefits their productivity and hard work created, not just their employers.

Laurie Carmichael actively practiced the politics of worker solidarity - you may have heard of the massive Moratorium March against the war on Viet Nam in 1970 - that came from many years of hard and patient organising work to build a movement against the war, Laurie was there through that hard slog

I didn't realise it was the centenary of Laurie's birth today - a remarkable unionist who shaped modern Australia. Laurie spent a lifetime of leadership with the AMWU and then the ACTU; among other things theorising union responses to automation in the 1970s @australianunions.bsky.social
