The baculum, or "oosik", as the inuits call it, is the penis-bone of a walrus. It's theorized that in a now bygone version of Genesis God removed Adams baculum in order to create Eve (instead of his rib) and that this would explain the scar-like line found on the scrotum.

This fear is made even more evident when you notice how he tries to refrain from cutting even outside of his oners. Thomas runs around the castle and the camera just melts through the walls in an invisible cut. He sacrifices the tension because he thinks a cut might ruin it.

A thing that has blighted Eggers' last two films is his fear of letting scenes linger. They're all so self contained and short in order to serve a glacial pacing that (contrary to his own intent) never ramps up. The sign of a true auteur is wasting time for the love of it.
