Hey there, potential follower!

A heads-up that I repost A LOT because a lot of things interest me and I think a lot of things are worth sharing.

You may find some common themes you're not equally excited about, so mute keywords and accounts as needed.

I'm honestly confused and worried I did something wrong - I set aside ~4h after reading this thread, and it took me <30 min to do and get a download of the verified copy? Maybe they stabilized the system in the interim, but I found it pretty painless.
If you are submitting an NIH grant in February, you will be required to use SciENcv to prepare you biosketch.

IT IS MUCH WORSE THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE.

Set aside *at least* 4 hours just to transfer an existing an biosketch into SciENcv.

I signed up for a creative writing class. Zero stakes. No grades. And someone asked if we could use chatgpt to help write stories. It's like... why are you here?

I have some more bad news.

If an admissions committee even suspects you used ChatGPT for your application letter, they'll almost certainly decide not to waste a precious admissions spot on you.

Instead they'll give it to, you know, someone who actually likes to write and knows how to do it.
I have some bad news. One, if you need to use ChatGPT for your graduate application letter, you are not ready for graduate school.

Two, no, not "everyone is doing it" and those who don't do it aren't "losing out." ChatGPT is not an advantage.
An impressive number of graduate applications this year used the phrase “curiosity-driven approach” 🤔

I saw this take on TikTok a few days ago and wanted to share it here. I had to truncate it because it's a bit longer than 3 minutes. Her central argument is the US govt has a problem in that decades of stochastic terrorism from gun culture has made us less scared of guns.

Early Dilbert comics were funny but also harmful to society because they turned us against the noble cubicle. Cubicles were civilization’s apex - a cloth box for everyone, millennia of progress ending in a private paradise cube - but Dilbert made them uncool and we’ve paid the price ever since

I may have to officially treat Black women unemployment news the way I treat Black maternal health news. I already know the gist and reading it will just anger me so much that my blood pressure starts acting up.
It’s bad enough how many losses there have been in federal jobs, but the private sector should be ashamed of itself for being complicit in this process.

Helping your biologist friends pack for moving always involves the hard questions, like "can you throw out 1m ill-preserved corals in the regular trash" and "but the city requires only clear trash bags, they're definitely going to see it, what do I do with this rotting coral I need to throw out"
