People don't appreciate how much money has been concentrated by so few people.

The difference between a billion and a million is a billion. The amount of money Elon Musk lost today (TODAY!) is more than the GDP of 85 countries.

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13.
I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.
Predicting El Niño and La Niña is tough, but new research analyzing 20+ years of forecasts finds dynamical models outperform statistical ones, especially for El Niño. La Niña onset? That's been much harder. Read more in our new ENSO blog post! www.climate.gov/news-feature...

are they stupid or what
It appears that staff fired today include meteorologists, data scientists responsible for maintaining weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

holy shit the great 2025 climate science purge has begun
One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.

I know face-eating leopards are absolutely gorged these days but come on, Robert
Laid-off IRS employee said he had voted for Trump: "I thought that someone with his business acumen would have come in with a fine-tooth comb and actually found it instead of coming in with a wrecking ball and destroying people’s lives for no reason."

All surface temperature products for 2024 are now live.

All show 2024 is the warmest year (very clearly).

The estimates of the change since the pre-industrial (1850-1900) are more uncertain but range from 1.46 to 1.62ºC.

It is therefore *likely* this was the first year that exceeded 1.5ºC.

The Arctic stratospheric polar vortex is currently exceptionally strong – it's in 'donut mode' 🍩

Per GFS analyses, the zonal-mean zonal wind at 10hPa (~30km) & 60°N is ~60 m/s, which is essentially equalling the date record and extremely strong for any time of year.

I had a simple pinhole camera in my south-facing bedroom window for most of 2024, capturing a long-exposure photograph of the Sun's trajectory.

I think the result is really beautiful. It's both art and science. It's strangely poignant to see (nearly) 365 days flash by in one image.

Has global warming accelerated in recent decades? If we look at the rate of warming between 1970 and 2008 and extend it through present, we see that almost all years since 2015 are above the previous trend.
