On this day in 1948, the second NHL All-Star Game was played. The All-Stars defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1. It was the first of a record 23 All-Star appearances for Gordie Howe. In the game, Howe was issued a major penalty for fighting Toronto's Gus Mortson.
