I have been cursed as a sort of turkey Cassandra, in that I tell people how to make it good, I even offer to make it for them, but they refuse, make it the same shitty way they always have, and then talk about how disappointing turkey is.

Just let me cook it, please.
I’ve won many bets by people who said that they hate turkey by serving them a brined spatchcocked turkey that’s cooked right.
Turkey isn't bad, people just don't cook it properly

I think it will be in April? Using colors semantically is not accessible.

Really appreciate this thread. I liked some of the points made about "A.i" harms in the HuffPo piece, but was also uncomfortable with the idea of setting a trap for students.
Since this article and its perspectives are generating a bit of buzz, I'd like to dig into what I find distasteful and, frankly, disingenous about it, particularly the ethical values it proclaims. 1/8

Oh, I thought you meant we all bring our favorite institutional or disciplinary gossip and share that.

I'll second what Hanna said. I've written things like "We are sad that X is leaving us, but they have been a fantastic colleague and here are all the reasons you should hire them."

I try to be understanding of all of the other Drew Lewis's who mistype their email address and accidentally sign me up for the Harbor Freight mailing list or whatever, but I have zero patience for the asshole that signed me up for the Free Press. They're a disgrace to our name.

Your computer algebra system insists on rendering \sin (x) ^2 instead of \sin ^2 (x)?

Problematic sage gap
Hamlet falls through the floor after reciting his soliloquy?

Problematic stage gap.
Bored with your 12 volume high fantasy epic but not ready to quit in favor of cozy romance?

Discourse surrounding “AI” these days often feels like a guy showing you his shovel and you say, “that’s a nice shovel” and he says “I am going to perform surgery on my mother with this shovel” and you say “Oh God please don’t that is not what a shovel is for.”

I am also *that person* who mentions that we have lost some trust but it's just aa much about institutions making commitments in 2020 that they walked back within 5 years and colleges who say all your learning can happen in a chatbot which devalues actual cognition.
Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

Where are the learning loss people? It’s hard to learn at school if you’re afraid to go because the secret police might kidnap you.
Charlotte-Mecklebburg Schools, according to reports, saw 15% of its students absent today amid Border Patrol operations in Charlotte. If that percentage of 15% happens Tuesday in Wake County due to the Border Patrol coming to Raleigh, 24.000 students could be absent from school. #nced #ncpol #wcpss

First off, my suspension has ended. Got a little harsh with a post a few days ago but I didn’t have my feet on the ground and I’m sorry if I offended anyone. Will try to be more chipper. Knock on wood!

My 11yo (who loves HP, Wings of Fire, etc.) also love(s/d) How to Train Your Dragon, Warriors, Goddess Girls, among others.

I finally convinced her to try Percy Jackson this summer and she liked it.

Is it "Don't befriend and exchange emails with a pedophile/sex trafficer" training? Because that seems to be a problem for a whole bunch of academics.

I think there are definitely people who think the purpose of high school grades is to rank and sort students for colleges, and that the purpose of college grades is to rank and sort students for employers. I guess we could argue about how different those are.
