Apropos of nothing in particular: SHOES

Per the FEMA training I took 30 years ago, the one thing that best ensures your survival in a disaster is whether you made it out of the building with shoes on.

Everything else can just be scrap-wraps, but shoes are high-tech. Put them on first, then run.

Mamdani hasn't quite said it, but almost, and I think he might get there - "I'm not a Communist. But if you call a dignified job, a roof over people's heads, and food on the table Communism, that's your problem."
I like that republicans keep calling mamdani a “literal communist” because they’ve been calling everyone to the left of william mckinley a communist for a hundred years and they need to distinguish

I did! A good paper, but an even more essential one is Gambetta/Origgi on Italian academia and the preference for low-quality work. Literally everybody I know who has read this and has experience in China has remarked on how useful it is.

a tweet i saw that really opened my third eye said basically that there's no such thing as red states and blue states, there's just states where the big city/ies that everyone else hates are a big enough portion of the population to dominate politics and states where they aren't
I mean, this is the whole problem, isn't it? A party rooted in the liberal, cosmopolitan parts of the country can't win outside of them, but you also can't not have a party rooted in those regions because that's a huge and influential part of the country.

Does anyone in Western Washington have an electric piano with weighted keys that they no longer use and would be willing to give away for free?

I have a ten year old ADHD kid whose heart is set on one for Christmas but it's just not in our budget this year.

Fight on their ground

"Rather than consider issues in light of actual facts, we suggest people with this mindset prioritize being independent from outside influence. It means you can justify espousing pretty much anything – the easier a statement is to disprove, the more of a power move it is..."

Idea for democrats who don't know where to begin to rectify all this: nothing moves forward until you remove RFK and all traces of anti-vax from HHS. All of you, 100%, no negotiation

Dumb q: if you spent one night there, wouldn't it qualify as a second home?
all else aside it seems weird that you'd get a lower interest rate on a second home than you would on a rental property
Here's the feds' "evidence" that state AG Letitia James committed bank fraud: She allegedly got a 3% mortgage rate on a Virginia house that she said she'd use as a second home, but she rented it out instead – so she should have paid a 3.185% rate, a difference of about $19,000.
