Today I printed everything I've published since I left government 4 years ago...

I wonder what I got right -- and, more importantly, wrong -- about how the world has changed since then.
History is odd.

In the first Russo-German war, France sided with Russia and won.

In the second Russo-German war, France sided with Russia and lost (then won).

If there is a third, win or lose, France will side with Germany.

Everyone designs their life like an artist paints.

Some prefer bold lines. Some prefer abstractions. Some prefer realism. Others romanticism. This is a good thing.

Trouble only comes when folks try to understand a Mucha as they would a Pollock or a Turner or a Bosch.

The outcomes of any given life, ranked:

1. Do good and feel good (Epicurus vibes, made it)🥳

2. Do good but feel bad (Batman at 3am, prosocial pain)🦇

3. Do bad and feel bad (Saul vibes, there's a way forward)🧳

4. Feel good because do bad (Eichmann vibes, no redemption)💀

This quote always comes to mind.

"The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have."

Coleman Cox

Was upside down jet-lagged after a month in Japan, but jumped on Bloomberg and pointed to the obvious: Ukraine isn't going to get what it needs from this White House.

"The answer to hate is not hate."

Erika Kirk

Amen. And she forgives her husband's killer. What a beautiful and powerful thing to do for the entire nation.

The blue collar of the Democratic Party has slowly faded, until, at best, it is now an off-white denim color.

Meanwhile, the white collar of the Republican party got darker and darker: today it is a navy hue.

What the country needs is not the second American revolution, of right or left, but the first American restoration, a bloodless return to our principles.

Our society is suffering because of a simple, single error.

We have not distinguished between the fact of an utterance and an utterance itself as a fact.

The former are always true. The latter, not.

Thus, lies are reported as a duty by those and for those who want the truth.

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

The opposite of a failed axiom is neither necessarily nor more likely true and assuming so is itself a failed axiom.

The only time you truly understand an idea is when you understand it well enough that it might have been yours

Then you have the sensation of it being correct, even if it's wrong

Thus Aristotle: the mark of an educated mind is to entertain an idea without necessarily accepting it

Trouble is, if you move fast and break things and the thing you break is the thing in which you are moving fast, you've stopped moving, fast or otherwise, and are just breaking things.
