I read a string of not so great books the last couple of weeks BUT I ended the month with a banger!
A Witch’s Guide To Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna was excellent. Full of found family & finding your worth. I laughed, I cried, I kicked my feet in glee. Highly rec

The lady at the charity shop today told me that she wishes people would clear out their children's old toys in the lead up to Christmas rather than after because she always sees a number of parents in the days before Christmas looking for toys for their little ones who might be strapped for cash. She said there's very rarely anything in just before, but that they get inundated with toys in the days after. And it really made me think about it in a way I never would have before. If you know your child is going to get lots of presents from father Christmas this year, by clearing out your cupboards a few days early you could make another child's Christmas a lot more special too. Saw this & thought I'd repost

A photo I took of a footpath, on the edge of Dartmoor, at a not dissimilar time of the year to right now, which I'm using solely in an attempt to persuade to click on the link I've posted here, which I realise is semi-futile since the hardest thing of all on any social networking site is getting people off the social networking site and gently nudging them to read something in longer form - especially if it's not zeitgeisty or angry or clickbait-friendly. Although I say that with a huge awareness that Bluesky is populated by plenty of thoughtful people who *do* still read longer form pieces, and books (thank fuck). I was listening to Richard Linklater - RICHARD BLOODY LINKLATER - today talking about how the most expensive and difficult thing of all when releasing a film is getting people to see it exists, and the marketing budget that now requires, because everyone is so overwhelmed and distracted all the time, and how difficult and worrying he clearly finds that. There comes a certain acceptance about this sort of thing, because raging against it will drive you plain nuts. But there is also a frustration that you cannot avoid nor pretend you are not feeling. The internet is complex. The world is complex. WAY more now than it was when I was growing up. What a lovely footpath this was, though. I wish I was out on it now, instead of here, still worrying about the £20,000+ of earnings my ex-publisher took from me, and scared that, as many people do clearly love them, my books simply don't have the money or literary establishment chatter and heft behind them to be safe in the world, long term. How nice it must be to be George Saunders, who doesn't have to do this stuff because his literary career got established in the late 90s and he'd built his fanbase before the internet became a mass illness. Also it's because he's brilliant, too, of course. And I doubt he's got a perfect life. Nobody has.
