What makes the passing of actors like Udo Kier extra poignant is that he was a reminder of a career film industries across countries and on multiple levels no longer exist to support. The vagabond weirdo who can show up in Criterion Collection darlings and DTV sequels, and be the best part of both.

Gun to my head to make a prediction 1 year ago, I would’ve had no idea which of those two filmmakers I’d be more surprised to learn received a personal invitation from His Holiness, a Sox fan from Chicago.
OK tonight I learned that Gaspar Noe brought Dario Argento as his +1 to meet the Pope, and this is possibly the sweetest and the maddest thing to ever happen.
The Pope got to meet Dario Argento! I wonder which of the Three Mothers trilogy is Leo's fav, I'm gonna say Inferno, cos this Pope doesn't seem like a Suspiria kinda guy.

Pope Leo's speech about movies is incredible and in many ways an antidote to how online discourse has poisoned film by fixating on worshipping false gods instead of focusing on the never-ending possibilities of the art form. Not the person I thought would make the most impassioned speech for film.
