unveiled a plaque in Labworth Memorial Gardens dedicated, and in memory of residents who sadly lost their lives due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This day October 29th 1966, in what was described as Burnham-on-Crouch’s worst ever night of hooliganism, hundreds of rowdies created a reign of terror that drove law abiding citizens off the streets. (report Maldon & Burnham Standard 4/11/1966)
A simplified map of the English tribal lands in the southern half of England in AD60 at the time of Boudica's (Boadicea) revolt. Boudica was Queen of the Iceni. The Trinovantes lands were centred on Colchester which was the first town destroyed in the revolt.

This day October 23rd (1976). Traffic in Maldon High Street was brought a standstill when 6 elephants & a camel paraded along the Street and posed outside the Moot Hall. The animals were part of Robert Brothers Circus on their way to join the other acts on the town’s promenade.
Reported this day October 22nd (1971) HMS Belfast, after being converted to a museum at Tilbury Docks arrived at her new permanent mooring in the Pool of London, just west of Tower Bridge.
This day October 21st (1950) the William Morris Gallery opened in Walthamstow. William Morris was an enthusiastic supporter of the British Arts and Crafts Movement and is best known as a designer of wallpaper and patterned fabrics, a writer of poetry and fiction.
This day October 20th (1845) Colchester’s first oyster feast was attended by over 200 guests. Now held on the last Friday in October each year, the Mayor of Colchester hosts a grand civic Oyster Feast in the Moot Hall. We don’t have an image from 1845, but this one from 2005.
This day October 19th (2011) was climax of the so called ‘Battle of Dale Farm’ with the forcible clearance of a travellers’ encampment north of Basildon. Said to be the biggest in Europe, 400 residents including about 100 children were removed.

The Norman, William (the Conqueror)
overthrew, Harold the last Saxon King
at the Battle of Hasting.
Harold’s body was taken to Essex and buried
within the grounds of Waltham Abbey.
Now not a lot of people know that!

This day October 13th (1965) the trial of Southend’s Chief Constable, William Alexander McConnach MBE, began at the Old Bailey. Eleven further charges of fraud and false accounting were added to the charge sheet. The defendant denied all charges.
This day October 12th (1967) The Ford Technical and Research Centre at Dunton was opened by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Now called the Dunton campus, a replica statute of Henry Ford stands to the left of the sign.

This day October 11th (1990) Warner’s Holiday Camp in Dovercourt closed. Opened 1937 it rapidly grew in popularity until the advent of World War II. In 1939 it was a staging post for hundreds of Jewish children rescued from Nazi Germany under the ‘Kinder Transport’ programe..
October 10th (1973) the Dept of Trade in a letter to Sir Bernard Braine, the MP for SE Essex, said it would be too dangerous to move the ammunition ship SS Richard Montgomery. The Montgomery carrying 1,400 tonnes of high explosives in sank in the Thames Estuary in August 1944.
This day October 9th (1923). Excavation work was authorised inside Cranham Parish Church (nr Upminster) to identify the remains of General James Oglethorpe (1696 –1785), soldier, British MP of parliament, philanthropist, social reformer.

This day October 8th (1933) Miss Zetta Hills hampered by rough seas, damaged steering gear and after capsizing twice had to abandon her effort to cycle across the River Thames from Kent. At the time she was just a quarter of a mile from Southend Pier.
