Sad to hear about Tom Stoppard. While Arcadia blew me away at uni, I still think his comedic pass at the Shakespeare in Love script made an average movie into a smarter, sillier film that even Paltrow works in. It’s a treat.

We are playing a three week game of The Traitors to build staff morale at work. So far I’m responsible for the deaths of someone who was off work with a horrible illness and now the nicest person in the building.
I’ve started updating my CV.

Dog has returned to his hobby of barking throughout the night. Fortunately, he’s got a really powerful, house shaking bark too. Ignoring him isn’t working, noise cancelling headphones can block him but not solve the problem and going to him only makes the problem worse.
Tonight, he gets white noise.

Me, upon seeing the new Steam Machine.

‘Yep, that’s bland and boxy enough to sneak into the home office and no one will notice for years.’

Reasons to have children #1
Running late and rushing around, so call downstairs to the 11-year-old, “Make me an espresso, please.”

2 minutes later, I’m sipping a long coffee but it’s close enough. Praise delivered.

Based on the P______ Andrew news, I can only assume there’s a big story coming at the weekend. Just at the start of half term too, what a treat.

After 9 years, I’ve finally got got a diagnosis of ADHD. Combined type, which was a surprise, although inattention is the main issue.
Felt like a positive experience and my, many foibles, have been validated.
Now, to try the meds.

In many ways, I’m still a bit in love with Diane Keaton in Annie Hall and probably always will be.

Rugby club trip with the lad to see Saracens (spits, politely, on the floor). Interesting how I’ve segued from feeling slightly out of place watching the game in my youth to feeling the same but with a white beard and triple-Guinness prices.

Time to tell my Patrick Murray (Mickey Pearce) anecdote:
When I worked for a local paper, he ran a pub in the area. One day, he disappeared (accompanied by some money) and I was tasked with interviewing his presumably furious partner - who had been left behind.

Therapists and counsellors tend to always be younger than me now. Understandable, thanks to the perceived linear nature of time, but makes for an odd dynamic.
Like Frodo encouraging Gandalf to talk about his feelings.

Day 3 of Covid and it’s not getting any more fun - concentration is terrible and I keep falling asleep. Plus, my teeth hurt which - a targeted news article informs me - a TikToker has been saying they had too.

Daughter described me as “a princess locked in their bedroom all day”.

Covid roughness continues. After a feverish night, latest symptom is teeth hurting due to sinus pressure.
Yes, I should have waited until 2.30 to note this.

“No offence dad but it’s just Covid.”

The usual sensitive support from my teen daughter.

Got me a sweet dose of 2020 retroism*.
*Covid, I got Covid.
Haven’t seen a line go red that quickly since the heady days of 2022.

Son picked out Clancy clunker ‘The Sum of All Fears’ to watch tonight. It’s so quaint watching everyone doing their best to deescalate international tensions and weed out the crackpots.

Took my folks out for the night to see Inside No. 9: Stage Fright. Well, they drove and bought me a pre-show pint but I did snag the tickets before it sold out.

It’s a spooky, jokey treat of a production and tonight’s celeb guest was fantastic - although my parents had to ask me who they were.

There was a moment in the most recent Alien Earth where the head of two mega corporations had a chuckle about governments having less power than them.
Maybe, just maybe, it’s best we keep that notion as science fiction.

Had to drive through one of the bleaker local areas and it was festooned with flags. As a tolerant white, British man, it’s interesting that - rather than patriotism - it’s a sense of helpless rage they create.
