Hello #PortfolioDay ! I’m a botanical illustrator working in traditional mediums and sometimes digital. These examples are watercolor and ink.

From bottom to top, the parts are: Bark, twig, leaf, catkin, flower, and acorn (which is very hairy looking). Ink drawing of a very lumpy pumpkin. The ink work is mostly stipple with some line and hatching. The pumpkin is turned on it’s side so the stem is pointed towards the viewer and slightly up to the right. This thing is seriously crazy lumpy. Image of a watercolor painting in front of it’s subject, a lumpy gourd. The gourd is lying down horizontally and has a bottle-like shape with a curved neck. It is mostly a creamy yellow color with dark green stripes running top to bottom. There’s a good amount of lumps and scuffs/scars.

Over the past couple of years, I have seen Generative Al creep rapidly into the television industry, and am not fond of it. I don't want a machine to write my scripts. I don't want a machine to make my concept art. I don't want a machine to tell my stories. And have yet to hear an argument in favour of the technology that has any actual merit to it beyond the capitalistic need for cheap and quick output with minimal input. It's here to stay' That isn't enough for me to just wave away the contributions to the climate crisis, the plagiarism and copyright issues, the *horrific* ethical consequences, the workforce ramifications, and especially importantly for me asa science communicator, the fact that it is, by and large, the world's greatest misinformation engine. For anyone else working in science TV specifically - listen to the scientists you work with. Listen to your most dedicated audiences. Listen to the artists who have historically visualised your ideas. Adoption of and excitement for this technology is nowhere near as universal as it seems.

ChatGPT and other LLMs aren't about to produce superintelligence, but if this is it, it's still changed the world. Not necessarily for the better.

I did a big picture look at AI, comparing it to search and social media, On business, politics, education, misinfo, ability to grasp reality, and more.

My kid and I assisted with the birth of triplets today. It was downright magical.

9. If you use Al to write something for you, it is meaningless and we'd all be better off if you had never said anything in the first place. This is the thing: Writing is meaning. The reason we write things is to express some sort of meaning, to pass along important information, to convey a human emotion or sensation. It doesn't matter whether the writing is grammatically correct, or vividly expressed. It matters that it came from you. That is the point of writing. If you ask a Chatbot to write something for you, you are being fundamentally unhuman and foundationally dishonest. I am not going to bend on this one. If it requires an Al bot for you to express something to me, you and I are probably not actually friends.
