so many of the small indignities of daily life come from us being denied the ability to tell a rich man in a tech company to fuck off. minesweeper has microtransactions. paid services have ads. the opt out says maybe later. the drive thru is a broken chatbot. your car is an ipad. fuck off! fuck off!

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Trump administration do literally one thing that isn’t comically evil and destructive challenge
Breaking News: The EPA moved to stop requiring polluters to report their emissions of greenhouse gases. The proposal would end a key tool the government uses to track carbon dioxide, methane and other gases that are driving climate change.
E.P.A. to Stop Collecting Emissions Data From Polluters
The data, from thousands of coal-burning power plants, oil refineries, steel mills and other industrial facilities, is the country’s most comprehensive way to track greenhouse gases.

ChatGPT and other LLMs aren't about to produce superintelligence, but if this is it, it's still changed the world. Not necessarily for the better.

I did a big picture look at AI, comparing it to search and social media, On business, politics, education, misinfo, ability to grasp reality, and more.
The Third Algorithm
ChatGPT and other generative AI isn't about to create superintelligence, but even if what we see now is it, the impact is on the scale of Google search and algorithmic social media, except maybe worse

Letting Google set the narrative about the environmental costs of "AI" is like letting tobacco companies set the narrative about the effects of second-hand smoke by measuring the health effects of sitting through one neighbor smoking one cigarette.

Leaf cutter ants don’t eat the leaves. They use them as fertilizer for the fungus they grow underground. They’re doing agriculture!
Ok folks: what is your favorite fact that you share with people (maybe a bit too) eagerly?
