I saw so many construction sites today in Gowanus, but not a single crane in the sky. It’s crazy how NYC tolerates the safety risk, costs, and slowness of building without cranes for the benefit of a crane operators’ union with only 1,700 members: www.city-journal.org/article/deco...

The warning lights that NY state lawmakers and Gov. Hochul missed in the leadup to the prison strike: surging injury rates and big overtime.

NY's illegal prison strike is about to enter its second week. A very dangerous situation for COs and inmates alike. Almost too many missteps by NYS to count.
Just now from the state prison agency:

"Those participating in the illegal job action will face administrative penalties along with Department discipline for violating the State’s Taylor Law and a judge’s temporary restraining order."

Bro hold my SEQR.
The Santa Cruz wharf collapsing into the sea because some jackasses used CEQA to stop renovations is a perfect encapsulation of how broken it is. The status quo is not neutral, and CEQA's bias is not protecting the environment as much as protecting the environment that existed when it was passed

Oil and coal keeping the lights on in New England as temps dip into the single digits. This is year 9 of New York blocking pipelines to supply New England with natural gas, which otherwise would have displaced the coal, and some of the oil, years ago.

NEWSDAY: Suffolk PD ”tried to fire him for what they called "egregious" misconduct, arguing he showed "no remorse," beginning from the first moments after the crash, when he called his union delegate instead of 911”

Suffolk Police Officer David Mascarella, who severely injured 2-year-old in off-duty crash, back on the job
The decision shows the challenges of firing officers for documented misconduct in Suffolk, where final discipline rests with a civilian arbitrator.

An indicator that NY state lawmakers aren't minding the cash register: the state payroll (measured without the prison system and public universities) is bigger than it was before COVID.

I spent much of this week trying to make sense of Gov. Hochul's call for a sales tax "surplus" rebate.

The short answer: there is no "surplus," at least none matching the gov's description.

Hochul Wants To Spend The Same Billions Twice - Empire Center for Public Policy
Governor Hochul’s plan to mail $500 checks to millions of households has a problem: the sales tax “surplus” she wants to dish out doesn't exist.

"Between 2012 and 2022, NY’s per-pupil spending rocketed from less than $20,000 to nearly $30,000, almost twice as quickly as inflation.

In every year, NY spent more than any other state, and by 2022 was spending 36% more than neighboring Massachusetts and close to double the national average."

A consequence of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good: New England's electric grid still burns coal on colder mornings.

With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats? (Labor is a huge issue for the commuter railroads and construction generally, an issue for the subway, and afaik mostly a nonissue for the buses.)

But yes, Janno Lieber should be fired too.

“I think by and large they do a great job”

MTA is taking a 2-stop elevator out of service for 6 MONTHS for modernization. Takes weeks abroad. Typical in US elevators – not just expensive, but slow work, due to no access to the global parts market, make-work union contracts & general lack of competition static1.squarespace.com/static/634df...
