Today’s progress on the “Badabaskor/Castle Blackstone + Environs” hex map.

Quite proud of how densely populated with Points of Interest/Terrain each 5 mile hex is.

The current state of my hex map of the local area around Fort Badabaskor and Castle Blackstone’s Ruins. Each small hex represents 1 mile and the larger penciled in hexes represent 5 miles. I managed to fill every hex with a good amount of landmarks, potential rest stops, caves, camps, mini-dungeons, towns and fortresses. There’s also a good variety of Terrain to traverse. I use the Hexmap key from the D30 Sandbox Companion by New Big Dragon Games. I colored in a few of the hexes during my Crayon days of representing terrain.

Current progress on the Local Area hex map. Main features are Badabaskor, the Castle Blackstone ruins (My Megadungeon) and the Crater where resources are mined. To the east is a mountain range, containing the Mounstrous Tribal Coalition locale and some other goodies (2 Dwarven Strongholds in hiding and one overtaken by a Green Dragon. The amount of special features (marked by a *) I have keyed so far.

As I begin to prepare for February’s AD&D session, I’ve focused in on the circled area.

The campaign doesn’t look like it’ll move away for a while.

The area includes a large crater (magical in nature), that allows the river and lake to flow towards the ocean. Lots of ruins and mines too.

The area within the borders is The Farroan Empire, a minuscule and weak shadow of its former continent spanning imperialist territory. Outside of it is The Liberated Coastline of Yax’mal, a newer country established by a the Native people of Yax‘mal and the City-State Rim-Fanathur across the sea. The scale for the new hex map is magnified x5. The top hex map is at a scale of 1 hex for every 5 miles, 1 large hex for every 25. The bottom one is 1 hex per mile and 1 larger hex per 5 miles.

More progress. If you are wondering about the big difference in HD scale between the encounters, my AD&D game is not very combat focused.

My game leans towards a Conversational FKR style, my players tend to roleplay/interact with encounters more often than not.

The map of my Pyramid Ruins, part of my homebrewed adventure (Homage to Temple of Elemental Evil, the Caves of Chaos from B2:Keep on the Borderlands). Handwritten Key to the dungeon map. I include a good amount of roleplaying encounters and a few encounters that are more likely to lead to a combat or tense fleeing scenario.
