Should be a huge story. 18 year old died in a police precinct after an arrest on the Fourth of July. So far, family and friends say police explanations aren't credible.

Monday, NYT does basic story. ⬇️

Yesterday, community rallied at precinct. (Very sad.) Local TV was there.

Why no NYT follow-up?
[Story ran Monday. Why no follow-up?]

NYT: NYPD Investigates Death of an 18-Year-Old in a Bronx Police Station

"Ms. Cheatham’s friends were stunned by her death, saying that she had appeared to be in good spirits on Friday morning before attending a Fourth of July family barbecue." Gift link!

Now is not the time to politicize a natural disaster because it might hurt Republicans. If it hurts Democrats there's no waiting period.

This was my flight approximately 2 weeks ago heading back to NYC from London.

It was less than half empty when they told us that boarding was complete.

I guess people really aren’t coming to the US like they used to…

Of note: I’ve taken this flight before and I’ve never seen it this empty!

Your regular reminder that most people in this country can't afford to move to another state and the inclination to say they're getting what they voted for in the devastation of a hurricane or flood or whatever the hell is a failure of common sense and empathy on multiple levels.
July 5, 2025 at 7:36 PM
People are showing their whole entire asses.

I hope you’re not suggesting that children deserve to drown in floods because of how their state voted in an election.

Anybody I see espousing the "FAFO" sentiment about those poor kids drowning is going on my block list. No exceptions. I don't associate with shitty people who take grisly delight in the notion that there's any justice in children dying because of how some of the adults in their region voted.

Just look at the food deserts in DC where you have one grocery store for thousands of people. They don't care that there's a lack of access to food for poor Black people at all. If it comes down to it, they will indeed just close, leave people starving, & keep it pushing.
An issue I don’t believe has been addressed regarding the deep cuts to SNAP, is how many grocery stores in low income areas will go out of business. Mom and pop, family owned markets. For many, almost all of their customers are on food assistance. The Krogers will just close their doors and move on.

The fact we have secret police whisking people off the streets doesn’t get enough attention. It ain’t normal and we’re further down the road to authoritarianism than you think.

NEW: Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s lawyers seek permission to file an amended complaint in his civil case in Maryland.

Among other things, the amended complaint “includes Abrego Garcia's first-hand account of torture and mistreatment at CECOT…”

I remember during undergrad talking with a professor from the USSR re their politics and its societal disadvantages, i.e. "At least we in the US are free since unlike USSR we don't have to carry passports all the time just to cross into different parts of the country." - good times
July 2, 2025 at 2:36 PM
I have seen so many folks with their passports peaking out of their pockets while walking around NYC lately (including the guy standing in front of me on the train this morning).

This is giving police state.

Yup.
Any Dem focusing on talking about tax cuts for the rich now instead of "President threatens to arrest Democratic Nominee for Mayor of NYC while celebrating opening of Florida Concentration Camp" is not paying attention and is not fighting for you and your safety.
Q: You message to communist Zohran Mamdani?

TRUMP: Well then, we'll have to arrest him

It brings me no joy to report this, but it’s been almost a full day of the Mamdani candidacy, I walked from Midtown all the way to Greenwich and back, and the city is in SHAMBLES.

I saw a man doing pull-up sets on scaffolding. There was a *jazz band* playing in the park, in front of CHILDREN!
