I can't tell you how many interviews I've done where I've been asked: If Trump's policies are so problematic, why are U.S. stocks rising so rapidly.

A bit of international context illustrates the real issue here.

U.S. stocks have dramatically underperformed other advanced economies.

When prices rise because *demand* is hot, wages usually follow. When prices rise because tariffs raise costs -- a *supply* shock -- there’s no reason paychecks catch up. That’s why tariff inflation hurts a whole heckuva lot more. It's a permanent reduction in living standards.

For me, this is at the crux of the UCP's use of the notwithstanding clause.
By using the notwithstanding clause pre-emptively - which, again, they *can* but *need not* do - the UCP is not simply admitting that their laws are breaching Charter rights and bypassing the courts.

They are further admitting that their laws cannot be justified in a free and democratic society.

Just like to point out that Calgarians always complain that big music acts don't come to town because our arena's roof (the #Saddledome) doesn't support the rigging for big shows. #McMahon is the real reason big acts don't come, not the dome #AC/DC #TheWeeknd #Metallica are obvious examples #yyc
