Pinterest comments are underrated, I think. You'll come across an amazing stylized drawing (uncredited) and someone under it will be like "leg too long", or a thirsty statue of Lucifer entitled "Lucifer" under which a boomer will go "reminiscent of the Devil"

i struggle with a brain that wants to stiffly copy whatever reference i'm using and one thing i've found helpful:
1. draw big blocky shapes over the reference
2. turn off ref and redraw big blocky shapes
3. draw in figure with big blocky shapes overlaid

I'm feeling good these days (no sympathy allowed!), but felt like resharing this comic i made in mid-2023 when I was feeling a lot less good.

The growing pains over the last few years have been really intense. It sounds fake but yes, even I, a powerful and flawless being, have insecurities!

1. (me drawing, face hidden by my ipad) So this is my 1 year anniversary of sending out a comic every week, and while it’s still very small and nothing special, I’m just really proud of myself for getting through an entire year without missing a week!

2. (me looking up from ipad, crazed look and dark bags under eyes) But this week’s issue is a little different, because I’ve been in a weird place for a few months and I’ve been having some wicked anxiety I’ve been trying to work through

3. Most working creatives probably know what I’m talking about when I mention like.. the gap or whatever where your ability and your eye/taste whatever don’t match up (ira glass speaking into a microphone) "For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not"

4. (me lying on couch watching the good place on TV) and at this point I’ve been through it enough times that I’m like (michael: "Yeah yeah, the time knife, we've all seen it. Can we get back on track, bud?"

5. I'm in that right now. It's fine! It'll pass in a few weeks.

1. (me drawn as a small child holding a pencil and paintbrush, wearing a tshirt that says "professional artist") I knew this one was comic. I felt good, and I recently connected with lots of peers WAY above my level, which is something I've been pining for more of

2. Imposter syndrome hits hard sometimes, though. (me, still a child, in a sea of legs belonging to grownups talking to each other)

3. (Me crouched on ground among piles of papers) I've been working on comics like they're school projects lately, mostly to practice FINISHING things

4. And to dig through the top later of "meh" work in search of the good stuff at the bottom. (me holding paper "this is perfectly average :)"

5. I've never worked a studio or done anything big (me with a stack of art prints on a counter: "here are some more postcards!"

6. I don't have an agent, I've never had any formal training, never published anything (me sitting deciding what to put in portfolio folder: "umm okay I guess... this drawing of a lighthouse... and this little pigeon?"

7. And oh god oh christ. I look and sound like an asshold in front of all these artists with decades of experience and achievements, adn I'm acting like I'm on their level, selling my little prints and freelancing. (drawing of me as child, still in a sea of legs, holding up a paper to the grownups adn saying "look at my work please! Please look! I'm just like you!")

1. (putting up flyer) But I also, y'know, live in a small city in a have-not province where, while we have a bustling art scene, we're also used to making our own spaces because opportunities would be slim otherwise. We're very community-driven,

2. (worms-eye view of large building that says BIG STUDIO!) And frankly, I don't currently WANT to work at Disney or Netflix or whatever

3/4: The social and professional asepct of all that makes me nauseous and is likely a whole other 90-page story that I probably need therapy to even start to unravel
- two people chatting at water cooler while tiny child me watches. "mulace frickets a supelled gation riatante!" "!! aber middlents pedively glined?! frickets?!"
- I respond: "oh yeah man, fricken. damn" and am met with "uhhh.. okay" yikes kinda looks from the other two.

5. I just want to write my little stories adn paint my little paintings and brighten things a little (lined paper with point form comic notes)

6. I think I'm *fine* at the first two, but I'm pretty good at the last part, I think. (people working out in a community plaza that has been painted with lots of rainbow colours

7. and I've been acknowledged PLENTY as a professional, especially since I've only REALLY been at this for 5 years. (various newspaper clippings, radio stuff, emails)

1. I guess I'm just floundering, trying to navigate a flood of major life changes (me exhausted, treading water in the open sea)

2. In an industry that is increasingly hostile (phone screen with threads open "so the company I was working for trained an AI model on my work without my knowledge and released me from my contract early saying they don't need me anymore. If anyone has any leads-")

3. Trying to figure out this new identity (trying to draw on ipad while tiny toddler hand reaches from behind it and grabs my leg "MAMA!")

4. And trying to convince myself that brightening things a little for people (pool noodle with note tied to it: I checked it out b/c of your art and my family had the BEST time! thank you for sharing your work!")

5. Is actually more than enough (me floating on the pool noodle in open ocean)
