When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

Elio is a delight! It’s a reverse-ET space adventure full of heart, really great comedic timing and over-the-top animation! But I guess Disney didn’t know how to market it because it has a brown lead? Take your kids and have a great time!

I replay Final Fantasy Tactics once or twice a year, usually when I’m feeling particularly down.
So the fact that the world decided now is the right time for the remake is a bad sign of what’s to come, I’m afraid.

I wouldn’t recommend The Materialists, but I could talk about it a lot. It’s gorgeous, with stellar performances from everyone involved. Its about relationships, and clearly has a lot on its mind but never really settles on anything coherent. Great to look at with not enough to chew on.

2025 Reads #12
DNF. Came into this book expecting occult/cult horror but instead found page after page of straight up xenophobia. Gave it up after 150 pages or so and I’m probably done with Dan Simmons even though I love Hyperion.

Bring Her Back is a masterful showcase of dread. From moment one it showers you in horrific images, sounds and situations. It hits from every conceivable angle to eat at you and keep you squirming in your seat. This one is for the real horror sickos and NO ONE ELSE.

Had some friends over this week to play some Wingspan and it was really good for my heart. Need more good times with good people! Got my butt kicked! Would do again!

Rewatching Andor season 1 with the wife! The thing is, I always get so distracted by how good the writing and acting are, that I forget the show is also GORGEOUS.

Nana Kwame wields words the way his protagonist wields her hammer—all huge swings and destructive force. It’s writing where you feel every line in your teeth. It’s sci-fi aimed at US prisons and deserves to sit among The Handmaid’s Tale and Parable of the Sower in terms of insight and impact.

Started reading Chain-Gang All-Stars and man, is this book kinetic! Reading Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s prose feels like watching uber-stylish anime like Redline or Gurren Lagann, but with so much more to say.
It’s action with big, loping swings and crunchy, bone-rattling impacts.

people regularly ask me what they should do to prepare for the possibility of mass violence and civil unrest. we give this advice often on It Could Happen Here but this is my list of advice in no specific order:
take a stop the bleed course. get to know your neighbors. Organize in your community. learn about storing food and filtering or otherwise obtaining fresh water. explore radio / ham comms. learn about disaster preparedness. Volunteer.

Day 13: Favorite Class or Fighting Style
My dream is just to be a magic swordsman: FF5’s Paladin or FF7’s Added Affect materia that lets you attack and do elemental damage or status effects.
That or gimme a shotgun.

Day 13: Best Voice Acting
The thing is, the entire time you’re playing Baldur’s Gate 3, you can’t help but realize what a high bar all the vocal performances are setting.
Then you hear Samantha Beart TRULY bring it at the end of Karlach’s story. Astounding work.

Day 12: Most Annoying Character
The Duck Hunt Dog made me so embarrassingly mad as a kid. Just a perfectly designed troll of a character.

Day 10: Underrated Game
Return of the Obra Dinn is correctly rated in online video game circles, but none of my friends will play it.
No matter how much I talk about it.
Maybe BECAUSE of how much I talk about it.

Day 9: Favorite Antagonist.
Weigraf from Final Fantasy Tactics, easy. A character with noble ambitions, who could be the hero of a different game, slowly torn down by the systems of power he fights against.
Weigraf has been the high-water mark for antagonist writing for a long, long time.

This is what everyone in education is trying to push to develop curriculum for our students. Doesn’t know who the president is, but good enough to teach your kids.
Hmm I haven't tried ChatGPT in a while — time to give it a spin and see why it's worth $157 billion

Crazy to me how hard lots of folk in education are pushing AI. Cause, like, 1) Don’t y’all see that reliance on AI is gonna put you out of a job?
And 2) AI sucks in EVERY single instance it is used right now. Why would we trust it to write our lesson plans?

Day 8: Favorite Protagonist.
I love games with big ensembles casts, but there aren’t many games where the main character is my favorite character. So it’s extra impressive that Ichiban Kasuga is objectively the best character in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Just an earnest, fun, charismatic dude.
