I might have a new career in industry, but another #KidneyWk calls for another Kidney Week Run Club! From now on it will be organized by @nephjc.bsky.social (basically @kidneyboy.bsky.social). Saturday morning, 6:30 am, Discovery Green. 3 miles + change.

As we transition from spring to summer, my career is also entering a different season. For the first time since pre-K, I’m leaving academia! Packing up my office today was bittersweet. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to lead a lab and look forward to new adventures ahead! #academicsky

Despite today’s uncertainties, it’s good to take time to celebrate small victories and to appreciate the people who show up to fight the good fight for #science and #kidney health. Annual Lin Lab holiday dinner at Michelin-starred Esme (complete with “elevated” flaming hot Cheetos #iykyk)

Role for the #APOL1 G1 variant in hydrocephalus? Interesting finding with human correlation! One caveat is that Apoe KO mice don’t recapitulate athero (in non-coronaries) without diet stimulus + aging. I would like to see a study with high fat/salt Micky D diet.

Apolipoprotein-L1 G1 variant contributes to hydrocephalus but not to atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein-E knock-out mice
Introduction In USA, six million individuals with Sub-Saharan ancestry carry two APOL1 high-risk variants, which increase the risk for kidney diseases. Whether APOL1 high-risk variants are independent...

When I got recruited people told me, “Don’t worry, last time anyone didn’t get tenure was back in the big NIH cuts and they just couldn’t get funding, even tho they did great science.” Cold comfort…and warning that R1s don’t care about your science, teaching, or mentoring - just money. #academicsky
starting a faculty position that relies in part on the NIH to fund us to do work at all just as the NIH is presumably being dismantled is really awesome thanks for asking

This is how you know you’ve hit middle age: it’s not when the music of your youth is played in grocery stores, but instead, when it is used to promote age-appropriate cancer screening.
