Just so y’all know how rough it is for the working poor: a QUARTER of my annual gross income will be dedicated to health insurance next year.

I make about $42k, gross.

My monthly payment went from approximately $200 to $500, deductible went from $2k to $5k.

to underscore this point:

uber requires drivers to have a social security number. lyft allows drivers to use a temporary identification number provided they’ve had their license for at least a year.

these folks all have legal authorization to work here.
new: federal agents have targeted rideshare drivers at o'hare on at least ten separate days since october 10.

in some cases, agents returned to abduct drivers multiple times in a single day, taking as many as ten to 20 people each time.

Being a good person in practical terms - a good housemate, or worker, or guest, etc - frequently boils down to this very simple thing:

Look around and see what needs doing. Then, do it.

I’m always stunned at stories of people visiting friends/family, and treating the hosts like servants.

We can and SHOULD be concerned about many things at once. This is a big deal. Oh, and also - RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES. BRING CONGRESS BACK TO SECTION WHERE THEY F'ING BELONG.
I know it's common to dismiss so many things as "distractions" from the important things we face but I refuse to accept that Trump is literally taking backhoes to the White House and Congress hasn't said a word as an important damn thing. We can be concerned about many things at once.

Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

I had three days of symptoms. First day and night was overall blah. middle of the night chills kicked in and lasted the whole second day. Third day was sweating profusely.
Get the vax, but like on a Friday!
People saying that this round of vaccines seems... rougher... is true IME. For the first time ever Novovax gave me a fever (thankfully it took almost a day to kick in and the fever was very mild and only lingered for a few hours).

learned recently that the guy who wrote "The Night Before Christmas," clement clarke moore, also wrote a takedown of thomas jefferson's proto-scientific racism in "Notes on the State of Virginia," basically accusing him and others of making it up to justify slavery. which, that's right.

Dear god please let them nail Trump on a permit issue by the county
“As of September, the White House had not even submitted plans to the National Capital Planning Commission, which by law must approve construction for most federal buildings …

The president and his allies have claimed that Trump doesn’t need approval for the demolition and building.”
“Trump’s new ballroom was originally billed as a $100 million project but has since ballooned into a $250 million behemoth …”

"The demolition work comes despite Trump insisting during an executive order signing in July that his ballroom renovations wouldn’t ‘interfere with the current building.’”

We don't have a king in this country, and Donald Trump doesn't get to sit over in the White House and make all of these decisions by himself. At least he doesn't get to if Senate Republicans would grow a spine"

Every single writer I know is SO bummed about how horribly heavy-handed the plot of the universe is right now. We’d never get away with this nonsense, and it pisses all of us off.

But also, the people in charge have no respect for the arts, so why would they be good at writing, I guess?

i mean, if you don't warn the subject of a story that they're the subject of a story, they clearly can say "backsies" and the journalist doesn't respond "no backsies" the journalist can't publish, that's how the rules work, right?

Whatever you think of the White House as a building or a symbol, the fact is that the image of it being torn apart on a whim two days after 7 million people hit the streets against autocracy is going to make a HUGE amount of people really, really angry, and that's an energy that should be harnessed.
