Not sure about any of this.
We lost one of our dogs this week. It was sudden and a shock to us all. And it makes me think of the ways we deal with grief and how private it can seem despite it being such a universal emotion. If you survive any distance in this world, you will grieve. It's OK. It's a natural part of being alive.

This is not good. Praying they find a way to contain it.
The Crabapple Fire in Fredericksburg TX is still 0% contained, and crews are currently fighting flying embers that have started new fires.

I predicted Trump would tank the economy back in 2016. It's clear now that he was only stopped by a GOP that wasn't yet fully submissive.

The president of the U.S. literally did a sales pitch for one of his top donors in front of the White House today. Man, at least our super-corrupt presidents of the past tried to HIDE their corruption and give their supporters a little cover.

Blocking accounts that constantly tell me to abandon all hope. In life, there is only action or surrender. And impotent despair is surrender.

My life is full of people to the left of me politically, and so many of them are struggling to find joy right now. It's hard to see. And it makes me worried that opposition will wither beneath despair.

Got an MMR vaccine today because doc told me that, being born in the mid-70s, I probably never got a second. Anti-vaxxers are shattering herd immunity, so it seemed prudent.

In the end, I do believe in the American people and their distate of any overbearing authority. I don't believe in the Dems ability to wage a credible fight. And that's what concerns me.

I need my Bluesky feed to have some humor. Too much gloom and doom to make the experience anything but anxiety-producing. Recommendations for more chill follows?

This really puts things in perspective. Thanks to Traces of Texas reader Stan Watty for sending it in!

I like all my friends here but the pervasive support for the killing of Brian Thompson on Bluesky--and the very little pushback of that morally abhorrent view--has made me reluctant to even log on. Tried again today and, nope, still post after post supporting murder for political reasons. Gross.

Colleges are starting to send out acceptances and rejections and I forgot how stressful that is on kids. Told my daughter that no matter where she goes to college, she can achieve all her dreams. But it'll be many years before she believes me.

This site is full of AI-generated nature photos. The world is staggeringly beautiful, but AI lessens our appreciation of reality by making it too clean and perfect. Beauty in spite of it all is is what makes nature devine.

And yet it's still an adaptation of a proven story. I think an original movie would do really well if it's good. We're starved for new stories on film! But those screenplays aren't being funded above limited release or straight-to-streaming levels.

I rarely see anything about Covid on Twitter but I see a lot of it here and it's almost all from the viewpoint of "the restrictions were 100% necessary in all circumstances." What's up with that? Something funky in the algorithm or is that a dominant opinion and frequent topic here?

In the 2000s, the academic left colonized the mainstream left & came to full power under Trump, turning a desire for protest into a movement to supplant the spirit of equality with the "laws" of equity. That alienated voters and helped revive Trump. I hope a better path is taken in the next 4 years.

Wicked was good. Have always thought its music is a bit paint-by-numbers Broadway but the movie is really well made and the acting is quite strong. Will certainly go see the second part when it comes out.

Not enough sports on here currently. So, let me be the obnoxious Cowboys fan who says: two game winning streak!! 3-1 in the division!! We're no good but others are worse!!

When it comes to work, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is like being in a tornado watch. It's quite possible things will be totally calm, but marginally possible you'll find yourself hunkering beneath a mattress and praying for it to stop. Let's see how this goes.

My main struggle with this site is it took me years to build a good feed on Twitter and not sure I have the energy to do the same here.

Fact: the aftermath of an 18-year-old's birthday party is indistinguishable from the aftermath of a raccoon infestation.

Started this account out of curiosity as to whether this place is better or the echo chamber others say it is. We'll see!
