When is Weird Al doing the Golden parody?

My money's on a song about getting a colonoscopy.

🎶It's going up up up my low intestine.
Get a good look at my colon.
See if there's anything swollen!🎶

Yup. Happy second anniversary to the day when I completely broke Bluesky with the #ChristianSkydivingBaby -- and it was glorious.
Given the very specific circumstances, I'd either check to see if I'm on drugs or if the baby is on drugs and if the latter find out where I could get some because clearly those are some gooooood drugs.

My home town has (had? Haven't checked in a while) a bank with a mural depicting their own robbery.

"Keep your money here, where we fondly commemorate our famous bank robber, Jessie James."
Fondly remembering that there's a bank skyscraper in the Chicago Loop that has a giant mural of Icarus flying too close to the sun over its entrance.

What a baller move for a bank. "Put your money here, where we challenge god with our hubris."

16% of graduates students in STEM fields in the US are Chinese nationals.

If we cut funding from any professor who has been the graduate advisor of a Chinese student in the last 5 years RETROACTIVELY, research in the US will grind to a halt.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”
U.S. Congress considers sweeping ban on Chinese collaborations
Researchers speak out against proposal that would bar funding for U.S. scientists working with Chinese partners or training Chinese students

It seems a uniquely Bluesky phenomenon to see someone describe Obama as *right wing*. Not centrist or (neo-)liberal (condescending) but *right wing*. Like... you know you're using this term in a way 98% of your nation-age cohort would never, right?

I had no idea (and initially had the slightest doubt it was a folk etymology by homophonic-similarity) but the etymology really checks out through French.

Enten is a prime example of a certain class of naive data scientists who sees everything as simple point probabilities and cannot see nonlinearities or even one's own contributions to feedback loops.

Ok antihistamines for severe itching (related to skin disorders) have severely messed me up to where I slept until 4pm local time yesterday, and now I'm still up after 5am local time...

Fun fun fun times here, but at least the house is getting cleaner in my restlessness.

Only through Fellowship so far, but the Serkis audiobook treatment of LotR is very good. I've read it twice but the last time was over a decade ago.

Other benefits of the audiobook format: not frequently referencing pronunciation guides and hearing the songs actually sung.

This is a spectacular thread. So many interesting things.
Long ago on the hell site I made long list of historically interesting things to use in dnd ttrpgs and I'll start dragging them over here starting with

2000 years-old sapphire ring presumably belonged to Roman emperor Caligula, depicting his fourth wife Caesonia.

I've been on the road so I'm behind the times—but if you wanted to destroy US science, I can think of no more expedient action.

Blatant unconstitutionality aside, fuck this backwards forwards and sideways.

69 miles (nice) of the Ohio River were designated a National Water Trail earlier this year, which means that full stretch is mapped with access points, tourism opportunities, and other amenities.

And it's been federally recognized as a critical natural resource!

I need to do a rewatch of that show, because they really nailed the atmosphere and themes associated with each character even though it was a mashup.
Tell me I'm not imagining that it's just the Rory Kinnear version from Penny Dreadful with Matt Rife surgery

I'm guessing someone heard about ectodermal cell differentiation once and it went downhill from there. (Nervous tissue and skin cells have a shared lineage that's closer than, say, skin and cardiac muscle.)

"skin as part of brain?"

This is that great intellect people talk about?

How does a professor of American literature describe Lolita in such anodyne terms?
Interesting email here from Elisa New, Harvard professor and wife to Larry Summers, to Epstein, reflecting on Lolita.

"...it's about a man whose life is stamped forever by his impression of a young girl."

That is a good reminder to look for anything connected to Martin Nowak later when I have the time.
We may see some prominent scientists and "skeptics" appear in the Epstein files: Epstein and Maxwell had connections to celebrity scientists and the skeptical community. 1/3
