People be like "Why are you giving Establishment Dem Leaders points" and I'm like,

I'm willing to acknowledge when even the folks I hate get past my expectations.

It doesn't mean I suddenly like them more. It just means I hate them slightly less.

basically: everything feels extremely bad now due to a void left by people going “oh shit money is real now? ok actually we will need all of yours thank you”. I think that there will be things (games & hardware) that can fill that void. This looks like one of those. I hope they’re good for us all.

The “2010s gaming was a ZIRP and that’s over now” feels awful but I do think it’s going to be relevant. Consumers have less money and less time, and publishers want more money for less dev time and salary. I don’t know what this will look like but it’ll be different; & I think smaller in many ways.

To me the console wars feel like social media (I know, hear me out): bluesky isn’t Twitter, but also X isn’t really Twitter anymore either. The thing that was in that space is gone. This is how I feel about the current-gen Xbox vs. the future: we’re just about to watch it happen.

Yesterday @marioprime.bsky.social had essentially this take: that the Cube will be competing in a market Microsoft has abandoned, either by no longer manufacturing hardware or by making something prohibitively expensive. Yeah, Steam can’t sell in brick & mortar, but can Xbox?

So I don’t think the Gabecube takes over every single preorder that would have been a next-gen Xbox, but imo it doesn’t really need to. If anything is the Xbox killer it’s Microsoft and what they’ve burdened it with.

So Microsoft, in what does not look like great shape to me (but what do I know), might want to jettison the parts of it that aren’t just making SaaS vaporware. I kind of think it’s even odds (or worse) on whether they make another console again. I mean, I don’t know that I would in that position!

But this is actually an overarching problem: within Microsoft games, Microsoft overall, & other studios.

I hate to say this but imo the infrastructure & environment of games in the 2010s was a ZIRP. Now that money is real again, execs are looking at modest profits & saying “not good enough.”

Microsoft wanting 30% profit margins from the Xbox division feels, uh, unrealistic to me. This isn’t what I, a reasonable person, would expect from a division where you have to look at the cold numbers on hardware production and realize there’s only so many corners there to cut.

okay look as a PC-first gamer I have scrupulously avoided weighing in on the Console Wars because I do not need that smoke, I just hope everyone has a good time, etc. but Microsoft’s decisions this year have left me pretty concerned that gaming overall doesn’t have a place there going forward.

Even if it’s not, though, consoles aren’t getting any cheaper, and it feels increasingly like their pitch is “buying at launch is the cheapest this will ever be”.

So people are tossing around, is this an Xbox killer? And I think my answer is no, but it’s more of a “well, not really, but.”

Price point could be an issue but not as much as I think people expect; it depends on if Valve sees its biggest adopters as people priced out of the PC market or out of the console market. no matter which, if it’s sub $650 base price I think it clears

okay so the Gabecube. the Steam Machine. the “if you don’t release a Companion Cube limited edition what are you even doing” box. With the Steam Deck, Valve has figured out how to fix their issues with last decade’s attempt. this is really exciting.

might post some rambling thoughts while my laundry’s going about the Gabecube, why the next phase of the “console wars” (such as they are) might look different, and some almost certainly incorrect predictions around games as a whole.
