Letter to Editor by Elaine Olund published in 1/23/2025 Cincinnati Enquirer: Thank you for your coverage of our changing climate (“2024 the world’s hottest year,” Jan. 12), which noted that “political will to curb emissions wanes despite rising climate disasters.” There’s a thin ray of hope shining through that gloomy statement be-cause ordinary citizens still have the power to shape political will. We can all challenge reckless policies that ig-nore climate change’s rising temper-atures, extreme droughts as well as more extreme storms. It’s collective common sense that will save us. Paul Harvey, a wise radio broad-caster of the era before shock-jocks, put it like this: “Despite all our accom-plishments, we owe our existence to a six-inch layer or topsoil and the fact that it rains.” The fact is, the hotter it gets, the harder it rains, and the more topsoil is lost to floods. According to the Wis-consin State Farmer (March 12, 2024), the Midwest is losing soil 10 times fast-er than new soil is being formed. We need gentler rains and healthier soil. But without the political will to curb emissions, this problem will grow worse. Change begins by demanding solutions and sensible changes. It be-gins with you. Let your elected officials know this is an issue you care about. Together, we can change political will − and begin to heal our world.
