Lionel Messi just had the best season in MLS history. Does anyone really care?

I wrote about it for The Guardian:

The Argentine has been as excellent as ever in his later years, but his presence and performance has yet to push MLS into the US mainstream

Thrilled to see @tombogert.bsky.social back at The Athletic. If you don't have a subscription I will gift you one (limits exist). BUT the most important thing you should do is go click his profile and click "Follow", because if you used to follow him before it doesn't auto-follow him for you now!

Odd word choice aside, I actually agree with the speaker. Posting speed limits that are so low nobody believes it's appropriate will only cause community outlash and ignoring them.

Put a roundabout in and they'll slow down. And probably be a lot safer for everyone.
“The last thing our police need is to try to enforce something where they are outgunned, unfortunately.” He’s talking about speed limits.
Listening to Federal Way's traffic engineer explain why a speed limit reduction isn't likely on a street next to a school after a serious crash - on a street where drivers are exceeding the 35 mph limit.

"It was a tragic situation that occurred out there...but realistically it's an outlier."

Look, they do not have the capacity or competence to do this at the scale they want you to fear they do, and your fear is precisely their greatest force multiplier. Everybody who is cowed into silence by their threats allows them a smaller pool to focus on.

Lenhart got slapped down harder by MLS than a perennial biter who spit on a guy....

MLS sucks.

Disgracefully light "punishment" to the Miami players from @mls.bsky.social today. Miami yet again getting special treatment.

Three games was the bare MINIMUM that MLS could do without being a total joke, they sure toed that line. Three effective games punishment for Miami after all of that is sure pathetic because, let's be real, none of those guys were going to play in Leagues Cup again anyway.

You are all mad that Zawadzki is on the USMNT over Cardoso or whatever.

If there’s something to be mad about is that Cristian Roldán is not there.

I know that it’s hard to put your prejudice aside but he’s been the best CM in MLS this year, and I don’t think it’s close. Just watch the games.

idk, Brian Schmetzer and his staff are all really smart and know a ton about football. They’ve been proven to be right more often than not, and that’s why Schmetzer’s one of the most successful managers in this league’s history. But this just doesn’t make sense. Maybe in retrospect it will...

So many of them have been absolutely inexcusable reds too! Just absolute "not thinking" in a game that requires constant thinking. Worries me about playoffs (and semi-final) for both availability and pointing to a way opponents can get into their heads.
Sounders have picked up an astonishing seven red cards, all in their past 16 games.
