If a bill is so bad that you have to exempt entire states from its consequences to win the votes you need—just don't pass the bill!

Why do people in Washington state deserve Medicaid & SNAP cuts, but others don't?

This is plain wrong, and it's just no way to legislate.

Sadly, I think we've been teaching digital/media literacy all wrong. Instead of focusing on teaching people how to be skeptical and spot manipulation, we should focus on teaching people how these systems work so they can effectively use them to share their messages and promote their values.

this is a succinct description of my content’s trajectory since 2020— from [rightfully] debunking disinfo abt my lupus med, HCQ (which i will still do on occasion), toward describing the world i’d care to see, some of the organizing i do to create it, & how we can care for each other along the way.

Perhaps the biggest problem this country faces is the total lack of any price to be paid for just lying non-stop about everything.

Most of the big press shops won't even call it lies. They just repeat the claims without comment.

Paying no political cost for lying is antithetical to democracy.

So am I reading this court decision correctly? We now have 50 micronations with their own laws interpreting the U.S. Constitution wholly separate from one another? But there's one guy with private law enforcement who is immune from all punishment who can do whatever he wants in those 50 states?

Remember, this new normal -- in which gangs of masked armed gunmen are causing chaos in the streets, pulling weapons and assaulting innocent people, and no one can say if they're crooks or cops -- was all sold to Americans as a way to make us feel safer.
“In Pasadena last week, a man stepped out of his unmarked vehicle at an intersection, unholstered his pistol and aimed it at a group of pedestrians before returning to his car… That incident left the police chief of Pasadena resigned to figure out whether it was a crime or part of a federal raid.”
'Who are these people?' Masked immigration agents challenge local police, sow fear in L.A.
Local police have little or no insight into where the federal enforcement actions are taking place. In some cases, local cops have been mistaken for federal agents, eroding years of work to have immig...

An example of erosion in the last 18 months is that one news story that would have generated concern and headlines for weeks now disappears within a day.
The chaos and dilution of reporting is deliberate - they’re now dismantling things in plain sight that would have been unthinkable prior to 2023.

In 2022, inspectors described a “cascade of failure” at one foreign factory.

The FDA barred it from shipping drugs to the U.S. — then excused more than 20 drugs from the ban, despite risks to consumers.
Threat in Your Medicine Cabinet: The FDA’s Gamble on America’s Drugs
A ProPublica investigation found that for more than a decade, the FDA gave substandard factories banned from the United States a special pass to keep sending drugs to an unsuspecting public.

“It’s my policy that I am not subject to federal law” is a hell of a position to take
To be really clear: The reason members of Congress can't just walk right in is because of the guns. Armed DHS personnel won't allow entry. In other words, DHS is using armed force to *break* laws.

Democrats need to wrap their minds around that. Accept that the frog is boiled.

University budgeting is often set up in a way that disincentivizes departments from wanting to teach undergraduates.
