Working on the book series this morning, and realizing I should post it here. We're interested in projects focused on contingent/precarious academic labor. Books are virtual open-access with print available.

First two books are available for download.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

To quote the glorious @lecagle.bsky.social: "The mountains are underwater and fascism is on the rise, so I recommend going ahead and getting that divorce you've been thinking about."
Sometimes you don't understand who didn't have your best interest at heart until years later and you strike up friendships where the people are excited to see you succeed and mention you in places cuz they aren't threatened and are not secretly competing.
It's a very clarifying moment.

Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.

OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.

New week, same old tip on how you can remember to add alt text to the images you share!

Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to add alt text before posting any images.

Go to "Settings," then "Accessibility." Select the checkbox for "Require alt text before posting."

A teacher with serious classroom needs and students suffering complex trauma asked for my help funding things for her classroom. I am sending things. As much as I hate Amaz&n, I will post a teacher's need list. On a dark day, a little way to help:

I agree with the critique of AI in the classroom here but want to note one thing.

The argument about LMSs isn't the way to go here. It presumes LMSs are supposed to make teaching easier--I don't think they are. They increase accessibility to our courses when used effectively. So yeah, that's hard.
🧵 addressing the argument: "AI won’t replace teachers, but it will save them time and make them more effective.”

Adding edtech doesn't necessarily save teachers time. A recent study found that LMSs sold to schools over the past decade+ as time-savers aren’t delivering on making teaching easier.
Technology is supposed to decrease teacher burnout – but we found it can sometimes make it worse
Efforts to simplify teachers’ jobs through technology can backfire without a strong focus on teacher well-being.

A few things since I teach in the UTenn system:

The creation of a new Accreditation Agency has to go through official channels at the Dept of Ed.

That same DoE is currently behind on reporting annual data. This is a multi-year process under normal circumstances.

We'll see what becomes of this.

Hey #ttrpg players, writers, & devs! I'm building an undergrad course on narrative games and sims - students will be playing&writing&designing print&digital games.

I'm building a library of solo/duets for students to play and analyze. I've got money to spend. Got recommendations? (hype yourself!)

Alright basic writing nerds, who can help Chelsea out? #WPAlife #teamrhetoric
So, do I happen to know someone with a PhD doing scholarly work in the developmental education work (in postsecondary setting, ideally writing/reading) who would be interested in (potentially) sitting on a dissertation committee?

Apparently the new Christopher Nolan film is going to be an adaptation of Homer's Odyssey, so I'll take this time to recommend both Emily Wilson's translation of it and Margaret Atwood's Penelopiad which retells the story from Penelope's point of view.
