Immigrants are…

a) almost uniformly not allowed access to public funds;
b) charged doubly for using the NHS (immigration surcharge and tax);
c) and required to make more than £41k and pay upwards of £10k/pp by the time they’re granted ILR.

What part of that is not earning their right?
“We welcome those who come to this country, legally, and give more than they take. We believe the right to stay here must not be automatic, but that those who play their part should be able to earn that right."

If Labour cannot denounce mass deportation of permanent residents, Idi Amin style, what is the point of them?

This is so obviously true.

It’s also – not for nothing – bonkers stupid as a policy. The reason the data shows so many foreign grads don’t transition to employment visas “as intended” is because Labour has made it even more difficult – and even more EXPENSIVE!!!! – to sponsor workers.
It is laughable to think that you can neuter the far right with minor tweaks like this.

How many Conservative or Reform supporters even know that immigrants have to pass a language test? They object to immigration on emotional grounds, not because they have dry objections to eligibility criteria.

Is there a reason I ask that the Times are using a picture of asylum seekers in a boat to describe rules for migrants who came on legal routes such as skilled worker visas for doctors?
Tough new conditions to be imposed on migrants who want to settle in the UK will not apply to more than a million people who arrived in the UK under the post-Brexit immigration surge
Labour’s tough new rules will not apply to migrants already in UK

Dismayed by the "I loathe Gl**ner but his arrest should scare us all" takes. The bar for arrest over a social media post *should be extremely high*, but a guy who's harassed trans people 19 hours a day for 8 years, telling his 600k fans to attack any trans women they see, clears that bar v easily?

I spent the 2010's arguing with my white colleagues that we were facing a crisis in newsroom diversity. The smart, dedicated, talented cis white journalists I thought of as my friends didn't want to hear it. Most of them ignored me. At least one of them told me to go to hell.
The only thing I can say about this paragraph is read it. Sit with it. Read it again. @michaelharriot.bsky.social

In April, the House of Lords quietly stopped requiring peers to declare their non-financial interests.

This is – quite frankly – an outrageous move to further obscure the personal interests of an almost entirely unaccountable legislative body.
