He was nominated, then campaigned to win, but that's not how it works.
The committee were apparently concerned about how to break it to him that he didn't win bc they knew he may retaliate. So they (and the winner) chose their words carefully. Even then, he misinterpreted what they said.

The news today about "Atomic bombs" is so horrifying one is stunned.
