A dumb part of me wants to die in Lake Superior now
(If you’re unaware of this, Superior is so cold and the depths so anoxic that bodies do not decompose. Everyone who’s gone down in it is still there, barring heroic recovery efforts. Many of them may have saponified and become “soap mummies,” which can effectively preserve them forever.

It truly is a wonder. I am not 1/1000th as blessed as these people, but a significant chunk of my budget is dedicated to "making sure other people don't starve or get unhomed"

I do it because it makes the world more like the one I want to live in.

What world do the ultrawealthy want?

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

like, what does that say? preventing any criticism of Israel, any at all, is more important than fighting the fascist threat in the US?

I'm glad to have a girlfriend who understands me distractedly responding to "I love you" with "I know" is not a sign that I don't love her.

First day of physical therapy for my neck today, after it hurting for over a month.

Really nervous for some reason. PT is great! But doing it as a woman? A trans woman? I don't know, it's new and scary again.

And I keep saying that in America, character is something you talk about, not that you do, which is why Trump will never lose favor.

A leader doing things would obligate their followers to as well. But too many people want to have the moral desert, not the work to make a better world.
Remember the time Obama personally caught a fainting woman during his speech — rather than just blankly staring like a sociopath?

Character isn't something you tell people about.

It's something you live.

Zohran picked 「卓蘭」("excellent orchid") for his first name and「夸梅」("brilliant plum") for his middle name.

The orchid and the plum are among "The Four Noble Ones" in traditional Chinese art, the former symbolizing an indifference to fame and fortune, the latter an indomitable, incorruptible spirit.

Random trans woman gender affirmation: realizing I could write an entire essay about this, because it's what my PhD is in, and I find it interesting, but realizing that no question was asked here, and I don't have to.
The Predator’s heat vision is actually pretty shit or it would be able to see Arnold’s exhaled breath. In this essay I will

It wasn't deep. It didn't have much to say. But Xiao Xiao inspired millions to try Flash animation for themselves.

A Beijing artist made this series -- and turned stick fights into a phenomenon. We're exploring why and how he did it:

In my experience, calling people out on this leads to hand waves of there being evidence somewhere, or citing the most bigoted article you've ever seen
Actually this is something that has always annoyed me.

Person: “here’s an example that proves my point”

Me: “here’s why that example is completely untrue”

Person: “okay but you see my point, right?”

Yes, but the evidence you proved it with was wrong!
I really do wish people would notice that the “trans women in sports will dominate and that’s unfair” brigade has literally no good examples.

If the best example you can find is that a trans swimmer tied for fifth, I’m pretty sure your point is just wrong.

My son has had maybe 6 "aunts" in his life who helped raise him, alongside his biological 6.
Sorry I refuse to entertain the complete non-existent world where white people don’t know that countless cultures, including some of their own but certainly diasporic racialized ones, call their mom’s cousin’s friend’s sister they grew up with “cousin” and call close women elders “aunt/auntie”

It's a little exhausting for these people in power to be poisoning the economy every chance they can get
Every $1 invested in SNAP generates $1.80 in local economic activity. Without SNAP, that will mean a loss of $15 billion to the US economy just in November alone.
Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.
