It’s 1970! Though also today, as we're cunningly timing this to Neil Young 80th birthday. When it became obvious the young *weren’t* taking over, the past became the new future, and music a self-conscious stirring together of all traditional American styles.

It’s still 1969! With it’s frenzied guitar and barbed-wire vocals, its staccato series of apocalyptic sights, ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ is like a Bosch painting if drawn with Grosz’s spiky pen. What’s more the 21st Century so far has turned out exactly like this.

In shock news, Four Eyed Gav went to an art show. In equally shock news, he found that critics didn't really get Neo-Impressionism. (Yes, that's the dotty one!)

It’s 1969! One night, Sandy Denny started singing the trad tune ‘A Sailor’s Life’. One by one, the rest of Fairport Convention started joined in. They’d done trad tunes before, but never so electrified. They played it live that night and put it on their next album.

I used to think...

...you won't believe this but...

...I used to think a ceasefire meant ceasing to fire.

Boy, I feel stupid now.

So Gillian Welch was playing Brighton, on a night I couldn't make. "She'll be back", I reassured myself. Fifteen years later she was in London, which seemed close enough. And of course it was worth the wait! Including this track...

It's 1968! And the Doors' 'Five to One' sums up the dark tone, the classic line “no-one here gets out alive” lending itself to their best-known biography. The hopeless idealism of the past couple of years was starting to seem hopeless and idealistic.

So I read me more Roger Zelazny, thanks to all who gave suggestions. Two random observations…

There’s a whole lot of immortal and/or super-human characters, which can’t help but feel like wish fulfilment. Its odd to think he co-wrote a book with Dick, whose protagonists were always regular schlubs.

It’s 1968! Were Black singers inherently raw and impassioned? Nina Simone was always poised and measured – if no less incendiary. Her albums were often wildly eclectic. While Aretha Franklin sang Soul and nailed it, Nina Simone defied genre.

1st episode of Star Trek: Brave New Worlds.

Guys, seriously? The state of America today and you’re still doing the same smug liberal interventionist thing? How you’re able to help out the foreign primitives with your enlightened attitudes and superior firepower? Now I need to take that taste away.

Four Eyed Gav has only recently returned from the astral plane after seeing Friday's spacey set by The Utopia Strong. Featuring Kavus Torbay (from Gong), Michael J York (ex of Coil) and Steve Davis. Yes, that Steve Davis!

Footage from Brighton, but another night.

It’s 1967! No, honest! It will never stop being hilarious that the first Velvet Underground album came out in the supposed Summer Of Love. ‘Venus In Furs’ is one of the tracks recorded in Hollywood, their presence in enemy territory spurring them on.

It's okay to call him Doctor Who.

The programme isn't named after another character who isn't in it so much.
Tell me your most unhinged Doctor Who opinion. I mean, if you’re a fan, they’re likely all unhinged anyway.

90% of examples of the modern novel can be summed up as First World Problems. No I don't care if you were getting angsty by your Arga in your SW1 postcode.

Mostly I have been lately going to gigs. Here’s some hurried sound-bite descriptions of bands…

Quade are like early Godspeed. Not their early albums, the earlier part of their tracks, the spacier, more ambient bit before the guitar chugged in. Only a less grand, Englishly unassuming take on that.

It’s 1967! And, after the longest wait yet, the Beatles have released their new single. Lennon’s psychedelic songs are both nostalgic and sinister. He said this was his favourite song from this era, possibly for all of that. Cranberry sauce!
