The Fireworks Galaxy - 100 billion stars!

In the last century we have witnessed 10 supernovas in the arms of this galaxy (Milky Way averages 2). All of the bright red spots you see are areas where new stars are being born, incredible considering this galaxy is 25 million light years away from us!

A giant E written among the stars...

This is Barnard 142, a dark nebulae made up of soot & dust that blocks out the light of the stars behind them.

It took 2000 years for this lack of light to reach my yard here in Victoria, BC :)

It took 550 years for the light from these ghouls to travel through space to spook us today...

Happy Halloween, my friends!

The glorious Comet Lemmon.

Last catch of the comet as it races toward the sun. And its tail gets brighter. Soon, it will shoot back off into deep space before returning on its orbit in 1350 years. Wonder what incredible worlds it will visit...

So my 13 y/o learned and taught me a new word today.

Levidrome.

It’s like a palindrome, except instead of reading the same forwards and backwards, it creates a different word entirely.

Like ward, and draw.

It’s named after the kid that came up with the concept in 2018.

My catch of the gorgeous Comet Lemmon as it made its closest approach to Earth. It will be back this way in 1350 years…

Friends, tonight's the night that Comet Lemmon will be making its closest approach to Earth for the next 1350 years. It's also a new moon. If it's clear after sunset where you are, find the big dipper (see below) to catch a glimpse of it... Here is my image of it from a few days ago, it is a beauty!

Look at that starburst!!

The Cigar Galaxy experiences star formation 10x faster than in our Milky Way. All of that bright red we see are millions upon millions of stars being born! Starburst!!!

It took 12 million years for this light to reach my telescope in Victoria, BC.

Comet Lemmon is getting closer to Earth! This beauty is now barely visible to the naked eye just after sunset and is getting brighter every day! It is now 92,000,000 km from us.

Comet Lemmon is getting brighter and is barely visible to the naked eye... if you want to try to see it, look just after sunset using the handle of the bog dipper as your reference. As the month moves on, the big dipper will move the the right but this is the area where you can see it...
