30 years making games (SimCity, The Sims, FarmVille, others). Still learning, still building, still excited about what's next. Happy to share what I've learned.

Drinking with a game director at a launch party. He said something through all the free wine that still sticks with me.

"Making a game is like landing a plane while you are building it, and the plane is on fire."
Everything about making video games is harder than you think.

In just a few days, you can see SPINAL TAP II: THE END CONTINUES on various large screens around the world. I’d recommend it, if only for the greatness. And the loudness. Plus Junior Mints.

I ran into an old Maxis/EA colleague at the Vintage Computer Festival. He's still at EA, and told me that, incredibly, they found a some of my old archived stuff from 90's Maxis! I thought it was all tossed and gone forever, but somehow there are survivors.

Very much enjoyed the Japanese film Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes... great small-scale sci-fi time travel concept, cool dense complexity, and only 60 minutes. Seek it out!

Something I quietly snuck into our digital library in-between larger projects...

This is Newsweek's review of SimCity from May 29, 1989 — the first mainstream coverage of SimCity. The founders of Maxis have credited this article for the game's success

Being in the East Bay is a key to understanding why SimCity 2000 looks the way it does

You ever wonder why the terrain in SC2000 is dull brown and dotted with random trees? Because that's what the hills actually look like in Orinda, where the game was made!

Efficiency is highly overrated; goofing off is highly underrated. Regularly scheduled sabbaths, sabbaticals, vacations, breaks, aimless walks, and time off are essential for top performance of any kind. The best work ethic requires a good rest ethic. #excellentadvice

I stumbled upon a streaming TV channel that runs Columbo 24/7, and now I see that Amazon Prime has 7 seasons of uncut Columbo episodes.
So basically, what I'm saying is, if you need me, I'll be watching Columbo.

Game Informer is back, baby! As someone who spent a bit of time trying to find a new home for the once defunct pub (and having no success), I am beyond delighted to see someone was smart enough to snatch this property up and hand the reins over to the team.

I'm not sure which of you need to hear this, but:

If you push yourself to your limits and burn out for a company, you are trading years of your future productivity for minor gains in the present.

Burning out will _fuck you up_, it's like brain fog or depression, and it takes years to recover
