I have seen businesses dump trash - broken office equipment, boxes of burnt-out fluorescent tubes, lots and lots of paper - near homeless encampments. Housed and wealthy people dump trash because they can get away with it and it will be blamed on the homeless.

When my parents were in their thirties, I remember we spent one week eating nothing but a large box of doughnuts from a family friend who worked at a bakery because money was short until the next paycheck for some reason.
My kids have never and will never have to do that.

I feel like this meme and the imagined lack of precarity in the 80s and 90s is downstream of Everyone Is Twelve. Your experiences with precarity as an adult are fundamentally different from how you experienced it as a kid.
