The hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) is a weird & wonderful bird, native to the Orinoco & Amazon basins in South America, where it lives in trees overhanging rivers & marshes.
It has a striking look reminiscent of fossil birds like Archaeopteryx, but is more closely related to cranes & plovers.

TIL: that "whale" as a verb meaning "to beat the hell out of someone" (or, as the OED has it, "to beat, flog, thrash") dates back to at least 1790.
