RIP Tatsuya Nakadai. His roles from the Jidagekis, WW2 war dramas and Japanese film-noirs were all beyond greatness. Here's a lovely video of him talking about his working relationships with 5 Japanese masters. Thank you for your movies!

It's #Noirvember time, again. Watch No. 1 this year is DEATH OF A CYCLIST (1955) from Franco-era Post WW2 Spain, where film-noir embellishes a very capable social melodrama. Highlight is its exquisite deep focus photography, something that would make Welles and Tourneur proud.

It's #Noirvember time, and starting it off with a first watch of Raoul Walsh's THE MAN I LOVE (1946), supposedly a primary inspiration for Scorsese's NEW YORK, NEW YORK. More melodrama and less film-noir, this would tick all the boxes for any Ida Lupino fan, who is just superb.

As 2023 ends and 2024 begins, here's the list of my favourite first watches that I saw last year. There is a clear bias to old Hollywood movies, as per usual, but my Mubi subscription is also well represented 😅

Well before the almost 20 minutes of 1959's copganda THE FBI STORY starring James Stewart devotes to the Osage Nation murders, there was a blink-and-miss shot of Clarke Gable inking an oil deal with Oklahoma Native Americans in 1940's BOOM TOWN. Earliest cinematic representation in Hollywood?

After 35 movies spanning from 1943's nifty B-noir WHISPERING FOOTSTEPS to 1993's sunburned neo-noir RED ROCK WEST, that is a wrap of #Noirvember this year. Full list of the movies here - boxd.it/q2eLk
