Real neato, 18c French royalty combined the mysterious Pagan Celtic Druid with Chinese Sorcerers and the Harlequin.

Pagodes are Chinese pagoda-and-Buddhist-statue inspired costumes the Harlequin walks around in.
A third masquerade held at Versailles in 1700 was hosted by the wife of Louis Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain, France’s naval minister who had green-lit the Amphitrite mission. Madame de Pontchartrain scored a coup in getting the duchesse de Bourgogne, future mother of Louis XV, to attend, dressed in a Chinese costume that her Jesuit confessor Louis Le Comte (the same Le Comte who wrote about China) had helped her devise. Her husband, Louis XIV’s grandson, attended yet another fête dressed by Bérain as a Chinese sorcerer or “druid,” complete with a long beard, a conical hat, and a diamond-patterned cape (Fig.5). His outfit recalled the commedia dell’arte character Harlequin, who sometimes performed as a talking Chinese pagod, and who often appeared in blackface to signify his “lowly” origins and “devilish” nature, attributes that likely contributed to emerging racial stereotypes.²⁶ All of these performances spoke to the ways in which “China” and its products could be transformed into a playful, malleable object for European self-definition: one that enabled former members of the merchant class, like the Ponchartrains, to gain access to the upper echelons of court society, or provided a means for royal family members (such as the duc de Bourgogne or his father, the Grand Dauphin) to subvert the classical aesthetics and absolutist politics of the court.²⁷ But they also conveyed how, with the rise of global consumer capitalism, the very definition of “self” was becoming increasingly reliant on or synonymous with “things”—a conceit that the Ballet des Porcelaines would exploit.²⁸

I run customer-facing teams and getting a deluge of complaint calls between Thanksgiving and NYE is literally a nightmare scenario that risks turning into a cascade (a couple people quit, more work for the rest, so a couple more quit, etc)

Spoke to my source familiar with internal workings at Mastercard. The holiday call campaign re payment processor censorship is working, there is a lot of pressure being felt from your calls. This is resulting in increased response times at a core moment for Mastercard due to the holiday season
