After the first draft

Sometimes, I like to call myself a mythogographer, one who is a compiler of myths, who renders myth to page to create something new. The more I write, the more I rely on myths of our past to create a mythology for the future, which is probably why I write speculative fiction. Often, writers get asked, "Why do you write?"

Texting & cursing

I realized recently while texting on my phone that my voice to text did not know the word “dadgumit” at all. Instead, my iPhone typed “dammit.” Not at all what I wanted to my very religious friend!

I’m really having fun writing for the Examiner.com (now Axios). I have 5 gigs there: Writing, Spec Fic, Hockey, Women’s Sports, and SyFy Channel. All right up my alley. This past year has been fun and I look forward to delving more into my columns in the coming year.

The Science in Science Fiction
Sunday I got to talk about “The Science in Science Fiction” at the National Space Society of North Texas‘ Moon Day event at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, celebrating the 42nd moon walk. I had never thought to talk about this subject, but it’s right up my alley, and I’ll be presenting classes on it soon. In this presentation, I discussed the history of science fiction to present-day, and how science fiction writers are also “science predictors” using all the myriad of inventions and creations and discoveries that were first forecast by science fiction writers. I had a lot of fun and hope to do this one next year as well.

Writing to Music

Do you write to music? I often do. But it has to be the right music, at least for me. And it really depends on what stage I’m writing in—first draft? Rewriting? Editing? First draft. No. No music. Except (there are always exceptions) if I’m stuck on a scene. Then I’ll select some…

Do you write to music? I often do. But it has to be the right music, at least for me. And it really depends on what stage I’m writing in—first draft? Rewriting? Editing? First draft. No. No music. Except (there are always exceptions) if I’m stuck on a scene. Then I’ll select some appropriate music for the background.
