More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...
Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees drop off the grid after leaving site
As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald.

Apply to help make your house safer from earthquakes | City of Berkeley

Households making less than $89,040 per year can receive $7,000 more.Rental property owners of homes with four units or less can also qualify. These owners, who do not need to live in one of the units to qualify, can apply to retrofit up to five qualifying rental properties.

"Few prominent figures talk more often about urban crime than the president himself, whose view of the city he grew up in seems frozen in the New York of Charles Bronson’s 1970s 'Death Wish' movies, in which an angry white man goes around the city blasting away at black and brown toughs."

Lol so apparently ACT-LA, SAJE, & other lefty urbanist orgs have put out an opposition letter to this without making certain changes to the bill. Interestingly they haven’t posted about it on here, but have done so on FB & IG. Curious to know what ppl think of their reasons & proposed changes?
HUGE NEWS: SB 79 by @scottwiener.bsky.social PASSES THE SENATE FLOOR -- This bill upzones areas near major transit!

I know the LA delegation is just business as usual here but its astounding that the part of the Bay Area that needs SB 79 the most, the BART and VTA parking lots around the South Bay, voted no or abstained. Truly astounding, this bill is about you!
Look at the difference between NorCal and SoCal.

In the Bay, out of the 11 Senators repping urban areas, 8 voted yes.

In LA County, out of 13 Senators only 4 voted yes.

The LA delegation is killing housing bills.

it's funny because, given that the chart is income *percentile* and not real income, this isn't actually a chart of non-college men getting worse off. it's just a chart of women catching up, ever so slightly

this story is just a great illustration of NIMBY nihilism. at core, these people have no vision for anything. they simply oppose change for the sake of opposition. (i also think there is an element of death denial here — if i can prevent all physical changes i can deny the reality of my mortality)
Peak NIMBY brain is trying to keep a neighboring airport open, even though the planes that land there are literally spraying toxins over your home, because if the airport closes then they're going to build affordable housing there. lapublicpress.org/2025/06/sant...

A campaign to build housing on the site of the soon-to-be-shuttered airport is drawing pushback from opponents of new development.

hell it's not even an *elite* backlash, lots and lots of people who aren't very rich or powerful were complaining because their burrito taxi driver was getting paid better
covid threw into high relief how many working class people are absolutely necessary to keeping society functional, and rather than that sparking a renewed commitment to an economy that rewards such workers, we've seen an elite backlash against even modest increases in their market power

It is 100% ok to be happy when Trump dies btw. You don’t have to be, but it does not compromise or diminish you in any way whatsoever to go PARTY TIME when a guy whose primary impact on your life was to make it worse kicks it.
The day he dies is going to be the most annoying day in internet history, the waves of celebration and pearl-clutching scolding for the celebration will come seconds apart. NOTHING in the last 30 years compares, EVERYONE will feel the need to weigh in, in the worst way possible. Everyone.

Could also reflect ⬇️interest in folks willing to move there, or more leaving. Too early to say.

Having read the stories about this, my question: Wouldn't brief in-person meetings with applicants end almost all of these scams?
scammers are using LLMs to take up all the slots in community college courses in San Diego as part of a financial aid scam. Hard to see a way this doesn't eventually kill remote learning for these colleges. Huge deadweight loss generated by LLMs.
Community college professors have been left to play detective has their online courses fill up with fake students as part of a financial aid scheme.
