People misunderstand the poverty v precarity debate

If you're impoverished, you may have no choice but to remain in New York, the greatest city in the world
But if you're living precariously, you may be forced to spend a week in Hell on earth: the slopes of W Virginia or the beaches of Panama City

I'm old enough to remember when Youngkin was held up as the non-Trumpy candidate, the Republican Party's way out of the quagmire of the Trump years.
Trump is considering removing DHS secretary Kristi Noem as early as Jan, four sources told @ms.now

Stephen Miller isn’t happy with pace of detention capacity expansion. Gov. Glenn Youngkin, possible contender for job, recently met with DHS/CBP officials

Wait.. why have they removed chain gangs, but field goals are still adjudicated by two guys looking at each other to see if they agree about where the ball went?

Pretty wild that Nvidia has more than 10X'd in five years thanks to the US tech sector, but they're willing to sell this country out to our biggest geopolitical rival for just a few more gains

(And also that our President is facilitating it in exchange for money & nice words)

So much of MAGA is essentially family llcs operating within organizations that are supposed to be meritocratic or at least anti-nepotistic

Hegseth's wife is the shadow DoD CoS & his brother an advisor, Miller's wife is a shadow press secretary, Kash's wife has some nebulous authority at the FBI

This is a good explainer (link below) of the "legal risk" Belgium keeps citing in its opposition to handing over Russia's frozen assets to the EU & Ukraine

Ultimately though, it just highlights Europe's rule-bound fecklessness
We're only here bc Russia has broken numerous treaties...

Ray Rice video on steroids
Himes: "I think it's really important this video by made public ... it's important people see what it looks like when the full force of the US military is turned on two guys who are clinging to a piece of wood and about to go under just so they have a visceral feel for what it is we're doing"

“Traumatized, humiliated, degraded.”

In terms of what’s understood to be socially acceptable behavior, normalizing the filming/taking pictures of people in public who are minding their own business (and putting it online) is one of the worst developments of the past 15 years.

Among the disconcerting things in this Wired article, a couple from this para stand out

Most importantly: there are already laws on the books outlawing the production of even fake csam, yet apparently the practice is rampant among AI image generator users-- how are these cos not in criminal peril?

Americans have been dragged, tackled, beaten, tased and shot by immigration agents.

They’ve had their necks kneeled on.

They’ve been held outside in the rain while in their underwear.

At least three citizens were pregnant when agents detained them.
More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days.
The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...
