John doesn’t usually charge for the room, he’s more than happy to lend a hand. He’s taken in a few people this year already, Marney’s brother had stayed with him for a week, an elderly couple whose car broke down outside the valley for a few days, and even Willy who’d broken the ladder to his loft and needed a new one built.
Point is, he’s used to people coming and going in his home. He prefers the company on the longer days where he’s working on the farm ‘till night, but he’s never had someone to help him around the farm for the season.
When Mayor Lewis came to John last month asking if the valleys old butcher could crash at his farm for the summer, naturally he agreed.
With his aching knee, it was a welcome surprise receiving Mr. Rileys letter insisting that if he’s permitted to stay, he’ll earn his keep. John just wasn’t quite expecting Simon.

Simon never bothered wondering if coming back to the valley was the right decision. He needed to get away from the chasmal city which he existed in for two perilous years after retiring. He found the address of the valley’s fisherman, and wrote his first personal letter in a decade. The valley didn’t need a butcher anymore, but it turns out it would accept him back without demanding anything in return.

He’s been staying at the farm for just over a week now, and somewhere along the line John had turned to Johnny, and Simon found he didn’t quite hate hearing his name spoken soft and deep in the quiet morning. But the days were going by. The tea herb he and Johnny planted won’t bloom until he’s gone and autumn sets in without him. Johnny makes him tea from leaves he buys from a traveling merchant, bloody costly things. But he’s there nearly every morning, tea in hand for when Simon wakes with the peaceful rising sun.
