Suffering

Suffering is part of human experience, and we will not escape it. But we can believe in the steadfast love and faithfulness of God, and discover for ourselves that even when everything seems all wrong, it can still be all right.

Hope

Hope is not a skill. Hope is not something we muster in our own souls. Hope is implanted into our very being at our birth. Hope is of our essence. We have been created in the image of God, who is the beginning and end of all hope.

Clark: So what are we doing here today? You have already voted to dismantle medicaid, the largest health care program in America. A program that covers 40% of all births in this country. 40% of children in this country. 40% of disabled people in this country.

Surrender

In a “trust fall,” one trusts a group below will catch them safely. To float in water, one lets go, trusting water will support the body. And like floating, sleep is surrender, a vulnerable letting go...

(2) Let us pray for the grace to let go of grasping at our own strength – the grace to lean back into buoyant water, freefall into supporting arms, and go to sleep with the firm belief that God is good and will keep saving.

Companion

When I came to faith, one of my greatest discoveries was that I could speak freely and openly with Jesus. It was wonderful to sit down in the evening and look back over the day in company with him...

(2)At first it seemed quite strange to be able to chat with God so freely. But as I did so, I felt God’s hand gently guiding and restoring me.

Ground

God calls each of us in ways that we may not understand. Our vocations, our experiences, our very lives may be excruciating mysteries to us...

(2) But even when we are most frustrated and desperate and bitter, the truth is that God is here, the ground under our feet, the air we breathe, the very fabric in whom “we live and move and have our being.”

Honesty

It takes courage to speak honestly and directly with God about the whole of our lives, but the task becomes easier when we remember that it is Love who listens to us.

Common Ground

For those with whom we differ, we will learn so much more, we will find arable ground in our souls, if we prioritize a curious “why” about our differences, not just the “what.” “So you value such-and-such. Why?” ...

(2)Searching for, finding, and claiming our common ground converts the equation from “what we are working against” to “what we are working towards.” We need one another.
