I've been waiting for something to convince the slavishly consumerist public that certain technologies are a scam and a joke, and then this story falls right in my lap.

If you said you were drunk but thankfully you barely drove home without passing out it would be universally agreed you should go to jail. It’s maddening how apparently if you own a Tesla, though, you’re allowed to brag about getting behind the wheel while impaired to the point of unconsciousness.

We have a duty as American citizens who believe that “All men are created equal” to push back against the far right radicals who are trying to divide us.
One day, these will be the incredibly dark moments we read about in the history books.

Thanksgiving: I'm thankful for the marvelous Tom Waits song "Chicago" — and the fantastic new cover version by Mavis Staples — and for the chance to write about it. www.chicagomag.com/arts-culture...
Maybe Things Will Be Better in Chicago
A spirited Mavis Staples cover of Tom Waits‘s “Chicago” gives us reason to muse on music, migration, and our city.

The reality, of course, is that Miller and a significant portion of Trump’s base are the ones who failed to assimilate to America’s post-WWII culture of multi-racial democracy & religious pluralism…and they are now using their power to destroy that once dominant (and still popular) American culture.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

We live in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. My 2nd grader goes to school with children whose parents lived all over the globe before becoming our neighbors & friends. The second graders performed in a concert dedicated to unity & peace

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.

When the State deploys men as agents of violence, it breaks a large portion of them. We see this in every iteration of man

Instead of reckoning with the universal fact that violence begets violence, the radical right will double down on a particularist vision of humanity & “purifying” violence
So he was "homegrown" + trained by the CIA, working for the Zero Unit in Afghanistan, which had a reputation for the following:

"The units also had a reputation for ruthlessness, with journalists and human rights groups referring to them as 'death squads.”

This is narcissism masquerading as philosophy — the technophile elite are not recognizing a new soul in AI, they're falling in love with their creation, staring at their own reflection in a digital pool.

It is the ultimate in solipsism and has its roots in a pathological fear and denial of death.

WELKER: What is your message to Jewish New Yorkers who feel you won't be tough enough in your response to antisemitism?

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

NEW: ICE has finally released post-shutdown detention data. The latest data reveals that a full 40%(!) of people arrested in the interior and held in ICE detention have no criminal record; no criminal charges or prior convictions. That is up from just 4% when Trump took office.

DOD contractors “mistakenly” landed on a Mexican beach, declared it US property and planted “restricted area” DOD signs, triggering a tense confrontation with armed Mexican forces.

Mexico removed the signs, insisting the area is theirs.

The district courtroom really is one of the last spaces left in American public life where there’s a serious possibility that a strategy built on the denial of reality just won‘t fly.
THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.
