Urban myth. Petty never saw Elvis live.
He did, however, meet Elvis briefly when The King was filming a movie on location near Petty's home in Florida in 1962.
He decided to learn the guitar after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 a couple of years later.
