Test Time Training is an approach that gives LLMs a kind of state/memory, described in this thread (#1):

The absolute kicker to all of this is that most of the solutions they are seeking already exist on your phone. They just need to be enabled by parents.

But, no, they want to bring an East Wing demolition crew to everyone's internet because no one can be bothered going to "settings."

When I talk about crowdsourcing bigotry, this is what I mean. The OU case is an anti-trans campaign, full-stop. Confected outrage generated by a well-funded group of elites (far-right GOP) applying pressure to other elites (university admin).

There are very few professions in which being able to perform without notes under intense time pressures is actually testing anything useful. Time constraints and deadlines are absolutely real. But the test is an artifact that we could just let go.

The really harsh pill for a lot of left-wingers/liberals is that excluding innately bad people who can't be changed much is probably at least a large minority of how high-performant organizations work.
Very interesting Gelman blog suggesting that a good amount of the "Mississippi Miracle" is selection bias (holding back lowest performers, who then don't take the 4th grade test) rather than improved learning

I will say that I do think this is fine by me, and one area where I differ a lot from left-wingers/liberals is that the right to exclude for private actors should be robust/strong, and kicking out low-performers early on metrics is good.

But yes, we do need to be careful of selection bias.

sure, but it annoys me when Christians act like bad people who are Christians aren’t real Christians. I would never deny that Epstein and Madoff are Jews as much as I wish they weren’t. Christians feel a compulsive chronic desperate need to no-true-Scotsman their own religion

Trump II and Starmer's government have a lot in common in that there is no actual plan to either bring prices down (Trump) or boost growth (Starmer) and instead what you get are the cabinet freelancing on their own portfolio with no overarching goals
genuinely do not think they have realized that this is essentially a labour shock that will make the economy worse

What’s funny is that Starmer is doing it with an utterly hostile media which would be desperate to savage him even if he were the greatest prime minister in history while Trump is doing it with a slavish media desperate to surrender to him yet both are heading for similar fates

I feel that this is two things. It's both a bad faith effort to go after trans employees but it's also an attempt to wreck higher ed in the state.

I completely agree we shouldn't be second-guessing it, but I also think it's worthwhile to defend her grading decision on the merits (especially since there are some large accounts who've been challenging it on the merits). In defending it, it's important to emphasize the need for deference.

Assuming they do actually fail any student who refuses or declares support for 3rd parties.

Again though, this story does even come close.

You could get to a first amendment issue in theory, but this is not anything remotely close to that and it's not even close.

Say you had a professor who declared "I hate people who vote 3rd party in elections" and required all students to swear they'll vote for a major party.

That's a 1A issue.

This is all a very good example of how TPUSA actually works to advance conservative ideas, and why all the paeans to Charlie Kirk's commitment to free discourse and debate were so mind-numbingly stupid.
she went to state legislators, TPUSA and conservative media outlets within a few hours of getting her grade, if you can’t identify the bad faith that can be seen from space, you need to get your eyes checked

Both things are true, the essay is terrible and the professor is being targeted as part of a larger campaign against trans people. Only one of these is really important right now.

The quality of the essay was a worthwhile discussion topic for like the first hour of the debate as the facts and circumstances were being established. Anyone who is still discussing the rubric or the essay is either stupid or in bad faith. Indulging them only gives cover to the actual goal.

I'm not as optimistic that this tactic won't spread beyond the anti-trans crusade. Doesn't take much in the way of imagination to predict a future where anyone who's not a white cisgender heterosexual Evangelical man gets put in these exact same crosshairs.

There is, fundamentally, no content to analyze. The actions of this person and the context in which they acted are perfectly sufficient to explain what happened and why. Engaging with this on any level more elaborate than "Fuck you no" is falling into the epistemic trap.

This threadlet makes a smart observation about the stubbornness with which some people and institutions extend presumptions of good faith to operators who’ve proven they have none.

He describes it as a “hangover,” which feels apt — because I wish like hell that the folks doing this would sober up.
Assumption of good faith is a solid heuristic.

But also "assumptions" are guesses you make before you have the evidence. You are allowed to retract good faith once more evidence arises.

But also, you shouldn't assume good faith from folks who are your avowed enemies.

See also: anyone who thinks you can preemptively stop bad faith attacks by giving them less ammunition.

Y’all, bad faith attacks don’t need ammunition to be supplied by the victim’s actions, that’s what makes them bad faith.

Not only does it make us miss the forest for the trees, it's also just true that what i (a white cis dude who is cartoonishly professorial) would do in that situation isn't relevant for what a trans grad student would do because the options available to an instructor are identity-sensitive.
