In 1979 ‘Reproduction’ appeared on the scene and, thanks to its innovative use of synthesisers, sounded like nothing before it. This was not the pleasing synth-pop of the band's later incarnation, but rather dark & sinister synth doom.

Roky Erickson, former singer and guitarist of the 13th Floor Elevators, struggled with severe mental health issues for much of his life, and trying to combat the voices in his head with LSD and heroin was definitely not a good idea.

Shane McGowan was a tragic figure: undoubtedly one of the most talented and outstanding songwriters of his generation, he became addicted to alcohol and ruined his health, leaving him mentally broken and dying in 2023 at the age of 65.

“Nowhere Girl” by B-Movie should have been a synthpop smash hit in the 1980s and at least as successful as “Fade To Grey” or “Are Friends Electric.” Alas it wasn't, but nevertheless it is still just as fascinating today as it was back then.

This fantastic punk album from 1981 is special because it does not contain those classic fast paced punk songs, but spreads a dark and brooding atmosphere. Moreover, the lyrics paint an accurate picture of Thatcher’s England at that time.

I can't praise this man enough: whenever I'm in a bad mood, all I have to do is put on any album by Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, and the bad mood is blown away. But he could also be sentimental and touching, as "Neon Sign" proves.

What a strange song by this French band: though the vocals sound weird and off-key, they fit perfectly with the song's peculiar and enigmatic atmosphere. In this sense, Trisomie 21 are obviously the musical antithesis of Daft Punk.

The Buzzcocks were one of those early punk bands that managed to combine the power, speed, and energy of punk with wonderful, catchy pop melodies. In this song, however, pure and raw power dominates, and the drum groove is simply amazing!

The Scottish band Stiltskin had a smash hit with “Inside,” but then turned out to be a classic one-hit wonder and broke up. However, their 1994 debut album “My Mind's Eye” contains some really great songs besides “Inside,” such as “An Illusion".

Michel Polnareff could be described as the French David Bowie—and his opening riff for this song is every bit as good as that of “Ziggy Stardust". Even if Polnareff never achieved the status of Bowie, he still wrote some damn great songs.

Somehow, this album unintentionally became the soundtrack to a breakup—and the sometimes melancholic mood of those songs was a perfect fit. Even today, this album still takes me back to that time when I was lost between hope and despair.
