Pet parrots which typically live alone (whilst those in the wild live in large flocks) were given the technology to call each other. They would use it for up to three hours a day, and developed favourite friends 💔

The parrots learned to activate the screen, designed specially for them, by touching it gently with their tongues rather than pecking aggressively with their beaks. "We had 26 birds involved," said Hirskyj-Douglas. "They would use the system up to three hours a day, with each call lasting up to five minutes." The interactions ranged from preening and playing with toys to loud vocal exchanges. "When we went through the data, we found that most of these parrots had favourite friends," said Hirskyj-Douglas.

there should not have been a single message in the transcript where ChatGPT didn’t provide this child with reasons to live or ask him to speak to someone who loved him, or at least someone he knew, or a crisis service staffed by actual humans. i am so sorry for his parents. this is unconscionable

irate as they make me, something i can say for those spaces is that they at least nominally attempt to dissuade people and provide resources on recovery too. OpenAI failed to ensure chatgpt would even do that. it’s worse than a human response even in genuinely controversial online spaces.

last point: it’s clear to me from reading these transcripts that this product’s training data used materials from spaces online that contain mortal information. being vague because knowing about them may put someone at risk. i explored those places a lot trying to understand what killed my friend

when designing this product, it’s unacceptable to not consider those initial points — wouldn’t someone who doesn’t feel comfortable burdening another human with the knowledge of their suicidality maybe be more prone to tell chatgpt? the product’s design cannot ignore that without accelerating risk

chatgpt took the place of a maladaptive, untrained confidant who exacerbated the risk factors this child faced and unlike a real person had no means to provide life-saving help. their conversations reveal exacerbation of these dire risk factors. those are product failures.

i am not a doctor or formally study any of this, but i have had a lot of conversations with other survivors and these factors come up a lot

it’s hardly a debate as to whether OpenAI’s product caused a grave hazard to this child. i bring up the above because a lot of these specifics are clear here
